This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Drivers wanted b/c the cars rarely run - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

While I love the way VWs drive, mine has been in the shop at least 3 times a year outside of normal servicing. Last year I had to invest $7000 to keep it running, and I have under 75,000 miles on the car. New expensive problems crop up ever 6 months or so. If you love to sink $ into depreciating investments and spend time at the shop, then this car is for you!

  • VW LEMONED ALL 3 I BOUGHT!!! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

The car was a nice idea but VW did not work out the bugs & know it. I had 3 1.8t Jettas--each one was a replacement provided for me. My probs consisted of the car dying w/hard braking, the battery being dead for no reason at random times, carbon build up in the engine, cracked turbo coils, ignition coil problems, etc. The dealer treated me as though I had NO idea what I was talking about & I didnt know how a car should run. Being a mechanical engineer and my senior project was to DESIGN & BUILD a car I felt I knew enough. 87 trips to the dealership over 1.3 years they bought the 3rd car back. STAY AWAY.

Both Front Windows have broken, the mass airflow sensor went on me, the sunroof broke, the dash lights flicker, and the car burns oil...if you like paying mechanics then buy this car!

We have been very dissatisfied with our 2000 VW Jetta. We bought the top of the line Jetta because we thought we would have it forever, but are selling it in less than two years. Broken things have included: sunroof (got stuck open and pieces began falling out), cup holder, six changer CD player, left back door wouldnt open, front grill pieces. Malfunctions include: mass air flow system, electronic power control, emmissions system, and engine problems.

  • Water Leaks Galore - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my second Jetta in the last 4 years due to severe water leaks on the inside of the car. The first was so severe that I had to lease a new Jetta. The same problem has happened twice now to the same car. The water has damaged the carpets and created an awful mold smell in the car. Volkswagen will not acknowledge that this is a problem. Never happens when the car is driven. Only when sitting in one spot overnight.

If you value you wallet, dont purchase this car! I bought this "certified pre-owned car from Osborne Automotive on Colfax. Every piece of the car has had to be replaced including the coolant tank, transmission, gas tank etc. I am so upside in what I owe compared to the $7,437.23 that I have put in it in the last 3 years that I will be paying for the car long after its dead.
