This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Fun car needing some minor fine tuning - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive had my Jetta for 7 months (8K mi) now & have not had any of the problems that some of the other reviews except the squeaks/rattles coming from the dash, & door panels. However, where I drive has awful road conditions -- especially late winter and spring. Before this Jetta I had driven new Nissans which also seemed to have a lot of cabin noise, so Im not sure if its the cars or driving conds. This car is the funnest I have driven. The ride & handling of the car are top- notch. The Monsoon system is on par with the Bose systems installed in other luxury class cars, and the overall design is superb, with some real aesthetic panache

  • Fun But Troublesome - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I fell in love with this car at first sight. It was fast, comfortable, fun, and the wagon offers generous space. The VR6 combined with the 5-speed provided lots of good times. Then came the problems. Little by little, this car started having electrical issues. O2 sensor, plug wires, ECU, random blinking lights, check engine light for no reason, and more. The "Comfort Module" also went out, causing the moonroof, door locks/alarm, horn, and interior lights to stop working. The final straw, yesterday I found out the timing chain had basically destroyed the engine. The service guy at the dealer told that my only option was to "get rid of it". Even he acknowledged that these cars are junk.

  • Buyer Beware!!!!! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Dont buy this car. Has a lot of known issues. If you browse through the comments on this vehicle and you will find out similar problems occuring to too many people. Malfunctioning expensive sensors, defective timing belts, window regulators, mysterious oil leaks etc. I had them all.Too many people with similar problems cannot be a coincidence. Dont let good looks fool you. Quality is a joke in VW and I learned it the hard way. And I can guarantee the manufacturer wont stand behind its product (though they are aware of the problems). Better take a little time and read the comments than being sorry: all these people with similar experiences cant be wrong.

  • So much for the Germans - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have 6000 miles on a brand new GLI. Its been in the shop for a cumulative of 20 days for the same electrical problem. This electrical problem inhibits the use of this car and makes it very unreliable. VW will not take responsibility and repurchase the car, and it falls way into the ball park of a Lemon.

  • every day I say "god, I love this car!" - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

got this car when my dreadful Neon died after only 60000 miles. This has been a TREMENDOUS improvement; Im fairly certain that from now on all of my future cars will be VWs. Mileage is EXCELLENT! Im amazed my husband and I didnt get any tickets when we first started driving this car since the drive is so smooth... its VERY easy to drive 10-15 mph over the speed limit, and still have it feel like youre doing maybe 5 over. Performance is great; overall quality of vehicle is great. This was one of the best decisions we ever made!

This Jetta is my second one and I absolutely love driving it. The handling and road feel are excellent and the styling brings positive comments from other people.

  • Goog little ride! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have a 2001 Jetta and so far so good. The only problem Ive had is that recently the sunroof got stuck...while open. The dealership took it and fixed it right away and even gave me a rental car. I commute about 45 miles everyday to work and I feel very safe in my jetta. I think it is reliable and sturdy.

  • Overall Good - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This is the 3rd vw Ive owned in the last 8 years, the 1.8 is very smooth and quick when matched with the 5 speed tranny. This is like all other vws in the respect that repairs are costly, my best advice is to buy a vag-com scan tool and a breakdown manual and do some of the work yourself, believe it or not a lot of the problems can be fixed quite easily and cost near nothing compared to dealership and repair shop prices. parts are cheaper when boughten online or from auto stores as well.. Ive saved thousands by doing so.
