This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • Over 60 MPG - 2005 Toyota Prius

With 2000 miles, Im averaging 62mpg (actual calculated mileage). Im a conservative driver and have learned to squeeze every mile out of a gallon. I should get 65+mpg during the fall and winter.

I have had my Prius since June of 2005. I bought it to replace a Toyota Camry which I drove for about 7 years. The car is reliable, fun to drive and makes me very, very happy when I put in about $17 to fill the tank with gas prices climbing to over $3.00 per gallon. I find the feel of the car very spacious and roomy. The drawbacks are that the mileage, while excellent does not live up to what they say. When I drive really well I am achieving about 47 miles per gallon with work. I cannot seem to sustain anything higher. For a very brief moment I achieved 50 mpg, but it didnt last. The interior of the car specifically the plastic scratches very easily. Though all in all, its a great car.

Great car. Would purchase another one when our family needs another car. I get over 50 mpg.

I was a bit reluctant to buy a new vehicle that was a hybrid. Any doubts or reservations are gone. It is truly a wonderful vehicle

I really love my Prius, Toyota. It rides smoothly, comfortable, roomy, and it is great on gas mileage - 42 mpg in the city - with gasoline averaging at $3.35 a gallon - I love it!

Our 2004 Prius is not as fuel-efficient as our 2001 Prius. We averaged 42 MPG+ on the 2001 and average 40 MPG on the 2004. We did average over 52 MPG on a trip to Colorado but that was downhill most of the way back. We use the air- conditioning in Southern California constantly and drive 70 MPH on freeways much of the time. Sometimes we can get up to 43 MPG on freeway trips of 50 miles or more but the around-town average is about 37-38 MPG. The rear window spoiler is a safety hazard for blind spots in traffic. Other than that it is a fine automobile. See the suggested improvements section for other complaints.

Great car! Runs as well today as it did 1st day I bought it! The issue is maintenance costs, which are considerable IF you dont do your own maintenance! Weve had no recalls, no repair under warranty, BUT the maintenance costs to-date approach $5000! That breaks down to about ($995/mo to be exact!) $3900 more than my 12 yr old pickup that I drive everyday! Ask to see the maintenance schedule & visit the repair shop and checkout the listed maintenance schedule prices! A REAL EYE OPENER! Oh, if I only knew then what I know now! OUCH!

  • Issues with 05 prius you should know - 2005 Toyota Prius

After purchasing my 05 prius with factory navigation and HID headlights, package 6 I believe. Just be aware that all 04 and 05 had the ugly painted door panels and dash, I strongly would avoid these if you can get the 06 and newer. the paint has peeled off on these parts. I went to a prius dismantler and purchased all the door panels and dash parts from a 08 prius to do the swap, so much nicer. The second and biggest issue is the HID headlight bulbs, they just shut off while you use them . The best solution is replace them with aftermarket HID bulbs, do not use the factory Toyota bulbs, they will go out again. Numerous owners have had this issue, ballast is not the problem, its the bulbs.

The Prius is a joy to own although I miss the sporty sleekness of my Toyota Celica. It has been a very economical car to own so far - fuel & no repairs.

I feel pride in driving a fuel sipper. My only complaints about the Prius would be the flat black metal trim (it always shows fingerprints), and the matte finish material on the dash near the window (it always shows dust). Id rather have vinyl or a leather interior (The tan microfiber always looks dirty).
