This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

Overall we like the Prius, buy it does not get the gas mileage promised. It is comfortable. It has reasonable pick up for a 4 cyl. It left us stranded on the freeway only 4 months after we bought it. The dealer didnt have the necessary equipment to find out the problem, so we were without it for 4 days. Seems it was a computer problem. The car "thought" the battery was discharged, but it wasnt.

A lot has been written about the fuel efficiency and the futuristic look of the car. But what took me by suprise was the fun of "trying to be fuel efficient" and the computer display (map and energy use). I was a foot to the floor sports car driver that loved the roar of the engine. I thought I was giving up that thrill; only to have it replaced with the video-game-like challenge of trying to achieve the highest MPG score. Strange but its turn practical in to an unexpected fun.

Disappointed with the Dummy spare wheel. Was stranded when car broke down on highway late at night just outside San Jose

I love this car. Ive gone 150K miles and its still brand new; original tires being the only problem so far. I paid it off last year so, normally, Id buy a new car. But Id only get another Prius, so why? My only worry is the battery. Its covered to 150K; but nobody seems to know how long it will last. So far Ive replace nothing! And the brakes are still great! I Love This Car!

Overall a very well designed vehicle. Needs a power drivers seat and telescopic steering wheel to fit a wider range of driver sizes.

  • Very reliable and economical! - 2005 Toyota Prius

We now have 145,000 miles on our Prius and it has no mechanical problems and drives as good as it did when I purchased it with 67k. Still getting 45 mpg, and I dont drive easy. Cannot find a better car out there for the money and cost of ownership. Have done basic maintenance--oil changes, spark plagues, air filter, trans fluid, and a new 12V battery, and tires. Only thing that stopped working was the cd changer, but we use an ipod through the tape deck anyway. Still using original headlight bulbs, and brakes. Car handles well; very easy to drive, very good in snow and ice. Unfortunately, the car does not have comfortable seats, and is not sporty or fun to drive for a young man.

After initial software problems, the car is generally reliable. Weather conditions, especially high humidity, will set-off a cacophony of warning lights, but after the software fix, the system resets itself so that I do not have to drive back to the dealership every week. Ive been averaging 51-52 mpg on the highway but most drivers will only average a couple mpg better than a corolla. The secret to getting the advertised mpg is in the law of averages.

Review based on one year of daily use, combined city and highway driving in both summer and winter. Positive: Great economy, comfortable, promotes conservative driving style. Well designed interior that optimizes room, comfort and ergonomics, offers excellent forward & lateral visibility. Excellent fit and finish. When pushed to the limit it behaves predictably. Negative: Too sensitive to cross winds at highway speeds, poor visibility when reversing (would benefit from active sonar). Spartan interior could offer sun roof & memory power seats etc. Over-boosted brakes and steering resulting in little driver feedback (probably a positive for average North American driver).

The car with its GPS and information and tech. items excels but needs more human luxuries i.e. power seats, telescopic steering wheel and a better riding suspension. It is well worth the purchase price even if gas mileage is slightly over promised, the savings more than compensate for monthly payments if financed comparatively to other cars. I do not find its design very attractive or space age but am very satisfied in its value and reliability. All in all after considering all other offerings I am almost completely satisfied.

I am very happy with my prius, but the mileage advertised is not accurate. I have been averaging about 47mpg around town, and 48 on the highway. The service has been very good, but I have about 6000 miles on it. The hatchback gives ample room, with the seats down, I get more storage room than in my Accura sedan, It is surprisingly comfortable, and handles well at high speeds. The quietest car I have ever owned. And importantly, it is better for the environment
