This Year's Model Updates:

There are no major changes to this year's Toyota wagon, although new SAE testing procedures have resulted in lower horsepower ratings.

Pros:
  • Versatile cargo area, roomy rear seats, good gas mileage, generous standard equipment list, availability of all-wheel drive and stability control.
Cons:
  • Modest torque output, less fun to drive than its styling suggests.

  • Fun, Comfortable & no problems in 4years - 2006 Toyota Matrix
    By -

I have had this car for 4 years and havent had a single problem with it! I bought it brand new when got tired of investing too much money into a 93 Ford Explorer that was going downhill. Toyotas MPG ratings are right on. I never get less than 25mpg around town and on the freeway I get 32mpg. This car is great for traveling and road trips. The cargo space is wonderful too. I play music and needed to fit my 2 bass cabs, amp and guitars into the car and they fit just fine. My buddy bought a Matrix cause he needed a new car and liked the roomy-ness (he is 64", 250lbs+). He fits his whole drum set and monster keyboard in his!

  • Poor Mans MINI Cooper - 2006 Toyota Matrix

Matrix is like my sone MINI cooper for $10000 less. Great car, quality, reliability, fun and roomy. Only changes I recommend would be remove coin slot under handbrake, very hard to get to. Left side instruments have no lighting at night.

  • Great car, leaks oil - 2006 Toyota Matrix
    By -

My 2006 Matrix has had an oil leak at the timing chain tensioner repaired 4 times. I just finished my arbitration hearing today, and Im not hopeful of much help there. Toyota wont admit that there is a real problem, and therefore isnt willing to do anything to help me. This is my first foreign car, and certainly will be my first, last and only Toyota.

  • Just Right - 2006 Toyota Matrix

I was hesitant to trade in my 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara mainly because I didnt want to give up the 4WD capability. Having one kid and another one on the way however, the lack of back seat room was a killer. The Matrix is just right!! Better fuel economy, plenty of room and I get to keep the AWD for those snowy winters here in Chicago. Before the Matrix I looked at the Chevy HHR and the PT Cruiser, neither one offers AWD and the Toyota quality jumps right at you when you compare them, no contest!!!

  • No rear a/c and poor driveability - 2006 Toyota Matrix

No fun to drive! Plenty peppy for 4 cyl, but handling isnt fun. I got the base model which was a mistake--it didnt have basic safety like ABS or side curtain airbags. Its super cute on the outside, has good room in the backseat. Front cup holders are too skinny for most drinks.

  • Not really excited - 2006 Toyota Matrix

Traded in my 2003 Honda CRV for this car which does have much better gas mileage, but The hatch back is extremely small especially when hauling groceries and book bags. Outside scratches too easily despite having the protective clear coating applied. Standard is a little slow on the pick up. Inside is nice though. Seats are comfortable and does have nice leg room. Just not big enough for a family of 5.

  • Happy with car - 2006 Toyota Matrix

I did look at five different makers before I decided on the Matrix. It offered everything I wanted for the money. I knew it had the same proven engine that the Corolla had, this was a big factor.

  • Great little car - 2006 Toyota Matrix

Ive been very happy with this car. Very reliable and easy to maintain. I do my own car maintenance and I really like how things are laid out under the hood. Ideal for my family of four.

  • GR8 little Matrix - 2006 Toyota Matrix

BUY IT ! We have owned ours since new. 38k now, avg 28 to 30mpg depends on city/hwy. Maint costs? Oil and regular sched. maint. is the only $$ weve spent. The Matrix is well built, dependable as a Toyota is supposed to be. Drives like a little sports car. Absolutely loves snow and adverse roads. Ease of getting into and out of the Matrix are among the #1 reasons we chose ours. Handy instrument arrangements and excellent visibility for lane changes. There are a number who say the little Matrix is terribly underpowered, well - we think not. How often do we need to exceed 75 mph ? Do we need to accelerate to fwy speeds quickly? Yup - and the Matrix gets that done with ease.
