This Year's Model Updates:

One of America's favorite cars is all new this year. Design goals for the 2002 Toyota Camry included larger interior packaging, reduced noise, more advanced safety features, better driving dynamics and, of course, a new standard of value.

Pros:
  • Roomy, powerful engines, plenty of safety and luxury features.
Cons:
  • High prices for XLE, costly premium features.

Love it so far; very quiet and comfortable ride, and I have no doubt it will be reliable given my past experience with Toyotas.

This is a wonderful car if you dont mind hearing noises every so often. The car drove great, but I took it back to the dealer 3 times and said somethings rattling and they told me I had sensitive ears. I had to have the rotors replaced after making 5 payments and Im not hard on my brakes. Its very roomy. I lived out of the trunk. I had a closet away from home. Like the fact that it had a full size tire, but the tires werent so good in wet conditions.

Bought it new. Used for lots of middle distance driving (100-200 miles). Best car Ive seen when considering comfort, mileage, and overall driving experience.

I just bought the used 02 Camry from a friend. In 500 miles, the catalytic converter went out, the A/C seems to be really week, I noticed the steering wheel squeaks (specifically on sharp turns), the rearview mirrors sags and it vibrates with the music on at any decent level, and the entire vehicle vibrates when coming to a stop. The dealership replaced rotors and pads and it is no better. The car is comfy and has good pickup, but so far I am very concerned about the quality, or lack thereof.

Great car until 95k miles. Head gasket went. Serviced and determined aluminum block stripped head bolts. Had to rebuild engine or replace. Toyota is no longer reliable as they once were.

  • A lot of Miles, still strong - 2002 Toyota Camry

Great car, I have over 256,000 miles on it and have had only one major problem to date, with a sensor. I now have a problem passing my states emissions bull, but other than that, its great. Sure, its not a burner with the 4 cylinder engine, but Im not expecting that. Im most concerned about staying out of the garage, and I have. I put 40+ per year on a car, and I would greatly recommend this one.

Bought my 2002 SE (w/ manual transmission) in 01/2003 brand new. Love the handling and good acceleration. Get a combined gas mileage of about 29 MPG (wish it couldve been higher) and 33-34 MPG on freeway (at a constant 70-80+ MPH). Not a true sports car but is good enough for me, especially w/ 16-in tires. I like my wifes 1997 Camry LE but this one is far better in terms of performance and gas mileage.

  • Camry is OK for the price - 2002 Toyota Camry

Owned 02 Camry since new - few problems prior to warranty expiration. Since warranty has expired, the seat belt doesnt retract properly and the driver door will not always unlock to get out! Have had 2 prior Camrys. Though mechanically dependable, I dont think the quality is what it used to be in the early 90s.

  • Superb w/ minor flaws - 2002 Toyota Camry
    By -

I purchased this car pre-owned with 36,000 miles on it. The car is loaded with every feature except fog lights and spoiler. The car glides over the road and is extremely quiet. This car is the most comfortable car I have ever driven. The V-6 is peppy, though not exciting. I average 27 MPG in mixed (mostly highway) driving. My only complaint is the transmission. In the first 2002 Camrys there is a flaw in the transmission that makes it stay in gear much longer than it should. It really makes the car awkward to drive, and the shifts are often harsh for the first 2-3 minutes of driving. After that, the tranny is smooth and responsive.
