This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru is building on last year's successful redesign of the Legacy by making a few additional improvements for 2006. For instance, Legacys with normally aspirated engines feature a new variable valve lift system that slightly improves horsepower and torque, while a new DVD-based navigation system has been made available on selected trim levels. The trim levels themselves have also changed slightly. The budget-performance 2.5 GT trim has been discontinued, leaving buyers to ante up for the pricier GT Limited. There's a new Spec B version of the GT Limited sedan with a firmer suspension and 18-inch wheels. Also note that GT wagons are no longer available with a manual gearbox. Base Legacy 2.5i sedans and wagons have bigger wheels, stronger brakes, an air filtration system and an engine immobilizer as standard equipment this year.

  • Best Four Wheel Drive Sedan - 2006 Subaru Legacy
    By -

The Legacy is without doubt the best four wheel drive sedan available when cost and quality are main considerations. Im impressed with everything about the car, from the comfortable but firm well bolstered seats to the crisp handling. The car seems tight as a drum, with a smooth engine that feeds off regular gasoline. While the consumption is lower than my previous car, Im averaging between 25-26 on mixed local and highway driving. Im eager to see how the car handles in snowy conditions, but based on comments from friends, I expect it will do well. Price, quality, unique engine configuration and awd make this car a great choice.

  • Great Value AWD Sedan - 2006 Subaru Legacy

I tend to be a harsh reviewer so please bear that in mind with the ratings. I reserve "10" for perfection or near to it. That said, the LGT is a great value especially with end of the year incentives. The engine is responsive even with the auto transmission. On highway, its very smooth and quiet. I tend to drive fast over long stretches of highway for my daily commute so this car is great for a quiet and easy drive. Flex the ankle though and the car really moves. Handling is sharp for a 4 door sedan. I only get 21 MPG on mostly highway driving and cruising at 70 to 80. Ive also had some odd rattles but nothing terrible. All in all, great car for the money despite few quirks.

  • 2006 Legacy GT automatic w/nav - 2006 Subaru Legacy

I mainly purchased this vehicle because of the availability of all-wheel drive since I live in the state of Maine. It is a fun car to drive, completey different than the 2000 Acura TL that I drove prior to owning this car. It definitely exhibits quite a bit of road noise and and the idle isnt nearly as smooth as my Acuras was. I do have to admit that the acceleration in the sport mode is phenomenal. I am totally unimpressed with the gas mileage and thats while driving conservatively. Reminds me of my old Jeep with a gas hungry V8. You can almost see the gas gauge dropping as you drove.

  • Great choice for the snow belt - 2006 Subaru Legacy
    By -

If you live in the snow belt (Im in Alaska) its hard to argue with this choice. Subarus non-turbo models offer the best fuel economy currently available with AWD - I get 21 to 23 in the city (depending on time of year) and can get 30 on the highway (real numbers calculated at the pump). It would be nice if there were an AWD deactivation feature, but that might lessen safety and reliability. The cloth seats are great (leather is terrible in cold weather & bad for the environment/inhumane). You wont win drag races in this, but its the only thing available that offers its blend of reliability, safety, AWD, a manual transmission, and good fuel economy in the same package.

  • Everything I expected and more. - 2006 Subaru Legacy

This is my third Subaru because, theyre reliable, safe, versatile and somewhat fun to drive. In the winter, I just love strolling past numerous cars & SUVs that cant handle slippery roads. The Limited edition is fun on exit ramps at 55 mph. Those tires stick like glue. Accelerate instead of braking and see how fast you can go. The car will go faster in the corners than youre willing to go. Oh yeah, I love the side curtain air bags being there, just in case. 30 mpg Hwy in summer time, about 27 mpg hwy in winter. The wagon is bigger than friends mini SUVs, fits a lot of stuff. 116K so far, no big problems. Do your own brake jobs, their easy to do and cheap, $55 for all 4 wheels.

  • First impressions 06 2.5i Wagon - 2006 Subaru Legacy
    By -

Ive had it for a week or so now and taken one road trip. I cross-shopped against a Mazda 06 and a used BMW 3 series (I could get an 02 for around the same price). Compared to the BMW it wasnt quite as nice and the engine wasnt quite as smooth, but it was surprisingly close. Throw in the difference in cost and the Subaru was the value point. I also considered the GT. With the lower mileage, the higher purchase price and the need for premium fuel and the softer tires, the GT cost an additional $10k over the life of the vehicle. May be worth it for some, but not me. Ive found the handling great. Acceleration was adequate, but not fantastic. I love the interior. A fun to drive car.

  • Fantastic and sophistocated drive - 2006 Subaru Legacy
    By -

Would never have thought I would own a Subaru. Just saw this HOT car while out looking at the Mazda 6 on the other side of the lot. My final decision was between the IS300 and this car. The Legacy had more to offer for less money. Its been 6 months and I have 12,000 miles on it. Still drives, looks, sounds and smells like new. I will never be able to buy anything without the AWD. It is also very comforting to know you are in one of the safest vehicles. I would recommend this car to anyone; it is a fit for just about every type of person.

  • A Great Car - 2006 Subaru Legacy

I bought this car as a replacement to my 1999 Audi A4. While this car does not drive quite as nice as the A4, the way it drives still "feels" very German. And if this Legacys reliability remains as solid as reported for all Legacys by Edmunds and other sites - I will continue to be very happy with this vehicle. It gives you almost all the best of higher end German cars with the reliability of a Subaru. It is so fun to drive. My only complaint is the quality of the leather interior. It just seems like the seats are starting to wear already. They dont have the same quality finish as the A4s seats. Other than that, I am a very happy Legacy GT owner.

  • This car rips! - 2006 Subaru Legacy
    By -

Subaru nailed it. 250 horses and it goes around a corner like it was glued to the road. I have yet to get the rear end to break loose around a tight corner, even at full throttle. Fast, but a very quite and smooth ride. One problem ... the seats are VERY uncomfortable. One hour on the road and youll wish you were back in your cushy SUV. And its a little small for a big guy. The interior is beautiful. The finish is excellent and the shift paddles on the steering wheel are nice when traveling down steep mountain roads after a day skiing in the powder. Good choice on the wheels and tires too. The look of the car is pure stylin! Or as my kids often comment, "Dad, that car is money!

  • Great car - 2006 Subaru Legacy

This is our 6th Subaru and the best so far. Acceleration isnt breath taking, but adequate, especially considering that I get 31+ for most of my driving which is 10% city and 90% mountain hwy. Good room, comfortable interior and pretty quiet/smooth ride. Lots of goodies for the money, with almost every power "option" is standard. All wheel drive is great especially for winter driving. I dont have to be concerned about being able to get home. We paid less than $18,000, which is a great buy! Very nimble handling on the "twisties", really a fun car to drive!
