This Year's Model Updates:

After a model-year hiatus, the 2009 Nissan Murano returns fully redesigned. Given its popularity, styling changes are kept evolutionary, while an upgraded cabin and key mechanical refinements further its appeal.

Pros:
  • Responsive powertrain, sporty handling and smooth ride, luxurious cabin in LE trim.
Cons:
  • Cargo space behind second row a few cubes shy of some rivals, compromised rear visibility.

  • Overall good, but... - 2009 Nissan Murano

Great overall vehicle. The interior styling and comfort are excellent. The stylish exterior is very nice. Sound system and controls are top of the line (except the driver will never hear the 2 subwoofers in the rear). I love the auto headlights and wipers! The 160 MPH speedometer is counter productive - the distance from 50 to 60 mph is like a centimeter, making it hard to pin point 55 mph. The low end acceleration is WEAK. Like many car magazine tests, 0-60 cannot be reached in 8 seconds (more like 9.5 to 10). Mileage is 16 MPG for me driving mostly city. Great vehicle if you can accept the poor acceleration and mileage.

We hit a deer at 70MPH with our 2009 Murano. Both airbags went off. If I would not have had my foot on the dash (bad habit of mine) we would not have had any injuries. However the airbag broke my ankle in two places, leg and toe. We feel safe in our Murano - will never put feet on dash again. We love all our features, nav system, heated seats, Bose radio, etc but when it comes right down to the basics - buy this car for the safety rating. We are glad we did.

  • Jack of all trades - 2009 Nissan Murano

Read over hundred editor/customer reviews on the Murano. Read and drove all the usual suspect comparisons. It came down to the CX9 (very good suv) but for our needs it was too big. We liked the Muranos size and we didnt require a huge amount of storage space. We use this as an everyday commuter vehicle and staying within the speed limits get about 23miles per gallon highway. The Murano does everything well but not great. Its certainly not a luxury suv, sporty or hockey mom suv but it does all those things adequately. While some decry CVT we found it to be one of the Muranos stronger points. We hope Nissan does not add a 3rd seat as there is stil a market place for a true mid-size suv.

  • Effortless Operation - 2009 Nissan Murano

Purchased the car one month ago as a lease. Coming from a 2006 VW Passat. The Nissan does everything effortlessly. It accelerates like smooth butter. It has plenty of power and is as smooth as a Cadillac DTS, but has more of a sport feel when you need it to. It is not a huge vehicle but your seating position is nice and high and you have a commanding view of the road. The VW Passat is a great car and is underated when it comes to value and performance. That being said I feel the same about the Nissan. Great car, good price. The only thing I can find to complain about is the leather on the door feels cheap and scratches easily and the storage is somewhat small. Buy it you will like it!

  • Roomy, Powerful SUV - 2009 Nissan Murano
    By -

The Good: roomy, powerful engine, smooth transmission, comfortable seats, good stereo system (if you can afford the audio upgrade, get it), AWD works great, CVT transmission works great (much better than the traditional Nissan transmissions which had many problems), seats 5, decent cargo space, good looking vehicle. The Bad: Wheel bearings went out ($800), catalytic converter issues ($1,500), interior plastic parts are cheap and scratch easy, rear seat handle release broke, could use a bluetooth upgrade. Overall... a great buy!

  • Should have kept my Sienna - 2009 Nissan Murano

I was ready to be done with minivans with the kids off to college. Traded sienna for the 2009 Murano with 30K miles. Base AWD model, very clean. Same common complaint about cheap plastic inside with A LOT of rattles and squeaking whenever you hit small ruts and bumps in the road. Ride is firm but plenty of power. very smooth shifting and I am averaging 23.5 mpg. Big loss of cargo meant I had to rent uhaul to carry 50 in TV. blind spots take getting use to. Seats very comfortable. Murano wanders easily on highway so can be tiring. took getting use to. My wife doesnt like driving the Murano saying it is an effort to be smooth with the gas pedal and keep it from wandering out of lane

  • Tough damn looking car! - 2009 Nissan Murano
    By -

I loved the way it looked overall. I found the "A" pillars to obstruct the view out of the front window especially looking to the left or right when trying to see before pulling out into traffic. The ride was never entirely smooth except when on the interstate. The final straw for me was the CVT transmission and the noise it constantly created. It was maddening to try and find the "sweet spot" with the transmission to get it where I did not hear the growl. I never could so decided to trade it in for a 2010 Lexus RX 350 and man oh man, what an amazing difference. This Lexus is a totally different experience and it is all good.

  • A Turkey in the Driveway. - 2009 Nissan Murano

I traded my totally reliable 2008 Honda CR-V in for my Murano. And at less than two weeks old and with 760 miles on the odometer, I was greeted Thanksgiving day with a car that was totally dead. Nothing worked. The dealer told me that I was not the first owner to have this happen. A power module had to be replaced. I lucked out. My car was in the driveway. The car ran perfect up to that point. I drive 80 miles one way to work and hope that the problem doesnt repeat itself while I am away from home. Lets see how well Nissan repairs its cars.

  • Still running strong - 2009 Nissan Murano

My wife got the SL in 09 and its now passed 80.000 miles. Ive read all the bad reviews here and all I can say is: were either lucky with our Murano or those other cars havent seen a lot of maintenance. Of course, its gone through 2 batteries but that is due to the fact that my better half never turns off any of the electrical consumers and her regular commute is generally short. ...And like other MO users, weve experienced that strange phenomenon when you have to call the Ghostbusters to scare the electrical gremlins that keep you from starting the car. Other than that, it has been a trusty companion. Powertrain runs strongs, the plastic interior holds good, all it needs is oils&fil
