This Year's Model Updates:

Not satisfied with the current crop of crossover SUVs? Nissan rolls out the newest car-based SUV, the Murano. It boasts a powerful V6 engine and distinctive styling.

Pros:
  • Very good use of interior space, unique styling inside and out, smooth and powerful engine.
Cons:
  • No third-row seating, SE model rides harshly, gets pricey with options.

  • Bad Vibrations Skewing Review - 2003 Nissan Murano

The Murano has been perfect for our needs. Good style, great ride, great performance and good use of interior space. It provided all our one car family requirements (retired). We are not getting advertised gas mileage but will give it some time. Had to have a computer chip replaced after 200 miles to fix non working interior lights. Have a real concern about tremendous vibration and noise in car when back windows are open. Scared the devil out of us. Vehicle felt like back end was going to break away at 40+ MPH. Plan on taking this up with Nissan. Cannot keeo vehicle if not corrected.

I have driven every SUV there is. The MDX, RX 300, Mercedes, BMW etc...I just turned in my 2000 pathfinder. I have chosen this for its price and sporty feel. I wanted a car/suv and this fit the picture. I drove the SE and it was alot tighter and bumpier than the SL. The AWD and the 2WD drove the same, not much different in handling. The dash looks a little mini van like and the style sort of resembles a raised Pt Cruiser. But overall the inside is awsomely futuristic and I love the Chrome accents on the outside of the car. The 18" wheels are cool as heck! This car has the most features for the buck. Worth looking into.

I have owned this since new, went in to buy an Altima, drove out in the Murano. It has been a joy to drive. It has been a reliable vehicle for over 142,000 miles. The only major problem Ive had was the transfer case went out at 138,000 ($3000 to fix, still cheaper than a new car). The one flaw I have found is the fuel filler neck rusting and pitting, causing the Check Engine light to come on, I have sanded it down applied LPS3 rust preventor on it well see if that lasts.

  • RIDES LIKE A CAR - 2003 Nissan Murano

I like the way that this vehicle rides. It is more like a car then a truck. The gas milege is 18MPG artound town and 23MPG on the highway. I love the AWD, it has helped me

  • Blown Engine at 3700 miles!! - 2003 Nissan Murano
    By -

Took the vehicle in for the first oil change at about 3700 miles and left dealer 40 minutes later. Drove about 5 miles and had the engine blow up. About a week later, a brand new engine was installed and found out that a connecting rod had come loose, gone through the oil pan and caused all engine oil to leak out, causing the engine to seize up and blowing a hole in the engine block. Had to argue with the dealer just to get a loaner car while the vehicle was in the shop. I was told Nissan does not give out loaner cars, but eventually one was given to me to drive for 11 days. The dealer was Rosenthal Nissan in Tysons Corner, VA.

  • Poor fuel economy - 2003 Nissan Murano

Excelent car. Great handling. Fun to drive. However , I can not get better then 18.5 mpg on a highway. Also, Id appreaciate more convinient position of the power outlet(cig. lighter). I cant plug in a radar without a wire mess.

  • Paint Problems - 2003 Nissan Murano
    By -

My Nissan is Glacier Pearl Whilte. It has been hit twice in the last 3 months and no body shop can correctly match the paint (painted 4 times now)! Even though the Paint Code is on the vehicle there are 6 variations of the color and then the color must be custom blended. Even on the parts that were not damaged there is factory color variation. This makes it next to IMPOSSIBLE to match the paint to the existing body parts! Gas milage is NOT 20/24 its usually 16/20. Fuel sensor is defective occasionaly lights up and says its out of gas when it is not.

  • Too big for you? - 2003 Nissan Murano
    By -

While I think the car is great looking, after driving it three months, Im beginning to have my doubts. Driver comfort is the biggest complaint. I find the front seats to be too wide--so that I cant have an arm on the console and an arm on the door at the same time. Because the seats so wide, and with leather, as I drive around curves or corners, I slide side to side in the seat, constantly readjusting my hands on the wheel. Its not a restful ride because of all the readjusting. And, for those of us not 6 ft tall, the armrest doesnt move forward far enough to rest an elbow while holding the wheel.

  • CVT needs replacement after 5 years - 2003 Nissan Murano
    By -

At 60000 the transmission was already having problems. At 70000 miles and 5 years old my transmission needs replacement. While driving for about 10-15 miles, it would have resistance at a stop sign, trying to pull into traffic. I would press the gas pedal and the Murano doesnt want to go, its scary when I pull into traffic and a car is coming. I love all other features of the Murano, just the CVT stinks. Today my Murano is stuck in the shop and I need $5000-$6000 to replace the transmission.
