Overview & Reviews
The AdvanceTrac stability control system has been improved with a new Roll Stability Control system and is now standard on all Mountaineers. A newly available Designer Series package includes suede interior trim, scuff plates and 17-inch chrome wheels. The roof rack has been redesigned, and now includes raised side rails. The 40/20/40-split second-row seat now has reclining outboard seats, and an eight-way power driver seat is available.
- Excellent ride and handling characteristics for a truck-based SUV, strong optional V8, comfortable cabin with user-friendly layout, good crash test scores.
- Some low-grade materials, low resale value, confusing controls on high-line models, lousy fuel economy.

love/hate relationship - dont buy it! - 2005 Mercury Mountaineer
By Lu - April 3 - 9:03 amI love all the bells and whistles on this SUV, but it is not worth the trouble. My first one was traded in under lemon law due to a sulfur smell that could not be fixed. My second one has been in the shop 5x after it keeps stalling/dying. (It currently has 26,000 miles on it.) At 20,000 it needed a new $1200.00 torque converter. It still stalls, they cannot find out why. It is outright dangerous. DO NOT BUY THIS SUV - you will love the features and not want to give it up, but it is NOT worth the grief.

Transfer case problems - 2005 Mercury Mountaineer
By Brian - November 4 - 8:23 amNice looking vehicle and drives well for an SUV, however body of vehicle is lacking quality. Mechanically our new vehicle needs a new transfer case and has been leaking transmission fluid like crazy. Also, the roof of the vehicle has many welding defects.
