This Year's Model Updates:

The RX-8 is an all-new car for 2004. Its arrival marks the return of Mazda's rotary engine to the U.S. market. Priced less than Nissan's 350Z, the RX-8 also offers four doors and a usable backseat.

Pros:
  • Low base price, agile handling yet still comfortable enough for daily use, room for four in a pinch.
Cons:
  • Option packages can get expensive, iffy interior ergonomics.

Once I test drove one, I simply had to own it. Car is an absolute blast to drive. It drives like its on rails, yet is very smooth and comfortable. Although underpowered compared to other sports coupes, it offers a very smooth power band, with the real fun beginning at 5000rpms. Just an overall wonderful daily sports coupe with so many wonderful features and plenty of power and performance.

Awesome driving experience. Constant acceleration through all gears. But I feel slighted by Ford by advertising 18- 24 miles per gallon. I have yet to get more than 14 and my commute is solely highway. Supposedly this will improve in time, but I doubt I will ever see 24 mpg. The interior is well designed, aesthetically speaking, but the materials are cheap and the door panels are easily marked. Acceleration off the line is a bit weak.

  • I love my 8!!!! - 2004 Mazda RX-8

This is the most fun Ive ever had in any of my new cars. Its been 2-1/2 months and I still love it as much as the day I bought it. So does my family. A reliable, fun, attractive sports car that is also comfortable & practicle was hard to find before the 8. Im pleased with my decision.

When you need a sudden increase in speed it doesnt do the job. After being washed the car is hard to start. Otherwise its so stylish..Oh and gas mileage with high-test isnt the greatest.

  • Car with Personality - 2004 Mazda RX-8

When the lights blink at me when I say "Hello" with my keyless entry, I have to smile. Driving this car has brought me nothing but pleasure. From the way it feels sitting in the drivers seat, to the looks it gets at every red-light, Im in love with my car. Have yet to pull alongside a Mustang GT or Corvette, and not have them feel the need to prove themselves.

I was one of the first people to get a rx8 in yellow..for the longest time I would get people turning heads giving me thumbs up and wanting to race..I love the car..it handles great..looks sharp..it didnt come with a rear spoiler so I had it added, which made the car so much more in looks! The only complaint is the gas milage..its a gas hog..

Performs like a dream and very forgiving. 6 Speed Manual is a blast to drive. Sexy car! Trunk space is adequate and more than expected from a sports car. Back seats, seat people comfortably with full back support. Regardless of having leather or fabric seats, they are comfortable and hug your body. Safety / crash test results are impressive (4 and 5 star).

I purchased the 2004 RX-8 I have now in 2006 as a used car. There have been some nitpicky items but overall I am happy with the decision. As a note, just this past weekend I turned 100K on the clock, so this car has seen more than its share of miles. As to the nitpicky items? I am a tall guy, with both longs legs and long torso, so I get hit on the headroom and on the legroom, particularly with the dead peddle, which I remove for longer road trips - theres an extra five inches of leg room that thing eats up! The laughable part, my SUV with 260K on the clock regularly gets 25-27mpg on the highway. The best I have ever achieved in the RX8? About 23. But heck, its a sports car!

  • Great Car for Most Purposes - 2004 Mazda RX-8

The RX8 is very fun to drive! Great road feel and superb handling. If you want to drive this car where there is snow - get dedicated snow tires! This is not a 4x4 (that are all in the ditch because they start well but dont stop any better) but I regress. With the Potenzas that come with the car RE040(very noisy and rough riding) forget about driving in the winter. However, put some Pirelli Wintersport 210s on and have fun! I have taken it skiing in Colorado numerous times including blizzard conditions and heavy snow and it came through just fine. Also since the tires are an integral suspension component treat yourself to some Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Positions - will get you home.

  • almost as fun .... - 2004 Mazda RX-8

The car is well-packaged, good transmission, good handling, but lack in power and torque. The cars transmission is almost as good as the one in the S2000, what lacked in fun and power compare to the S2000 was made up with extra room and safer cornering. I had to trade my S2000 in because it was fun but dangerous in high speed cornering and not a long distance car at all. The RX8 is 9/10th the fun of a S2000 and 9/10th the user-friendly of a Civic.
