This Year's Model Updates:

For 2003, power sliding doors are an option for both the LX and ES trim levels. A towing package and a cargo organizer are two other new options. Also, an alarm and engine immobilizer are now part of a security package, and a cassette player is available on the ES trim level. The LX trim now rides on 16-inch wheels. Inside, floor and cargo mats are now standard on both trim levels, while outside, you'll see a new exhaust tip.

Pros:
  • Compact and maneuverable, confident handling manners, roll-down windows in the sliding doors.
Cons:
  • Limited maximum cargo capacity, lacks some features found in the other minivans.

Best priced qualtiy minivan on the market. Great car!! The only issue I have is the front seat is a little uncomfortable. Otherwise a super buy!!

We previously owned an 00 MPV DX. It was nice, but lacked a few creature comforts. The combination of subtle and not-so-subtle improvements is absolutely fantastic. The extra horsepower, torque and 5th gear in the automatic translate to cleaner shift points and better mileage. We got an incredible deal on an 03 leftover, and are thoroughly enjoying the luxury. If youre considering a minivan and dont need the long wheelbase of a GM or Chrysler product, give this a try. It handles like a sports sedan, and is every bit as equipped as the top-ranked Odyssey.

Just got a brand new 2003 LX sand mica (still in wrap when we test drove it). Sharp looking. Ride is quite, smooth and comfortable. Handling and parking is easy. Breaking is confident. A/C is cold. It takes no effort to open or close the manual sliding doors, so I didnt choose the power doors. Like all the features of the 2nd and 3rd row seats (they are big toys for me now). The plastic materials of the front middle table, the storage under passenger seat and the real console feel cheap, but practically usable. Overall a beautiful convenient reliable family car. I also own a 90 323 with 130,000 miles and it still runs well. I hope the MPV will treat me even better.

Excellent handling, cornering, a lot of power (0-60mph est. 8.2 sec.), stopping is tight, body style is great for a minivan (even look better in person than photo), a lot of room for 7 people, or 4 people with bikes, I love it, nice to drive and cruise around town, easy to park, very good value!

We just picked up a loaded LX zoom zoom demo from Faulkner Mazda in PA and I must say this puppy is the bomb! We were all set to purchase new minus the power doors and DVD system, then the sales person showed us the demo that included every available option for less than the new price. The demo only had 6K miles and came with an extended warranty on the powertrain to 100k and the balance of the 4/50k bumber to bumper factory warranty. All of this for $23,600 !! I say let Sienna and Odyssey beat each other up on price because the MPV is the best kept secret in the industry.

After 4 months and 6,000 miles I am averaging 22/28 mpg (yes, I do drive it nice!). Moves crisply through traffic and parks easily almost anywhere. Love the fold down third seat and the "well" (its perfect for groceries). Zippy power in the Colorado Rockies (even going up through mtn passes!)Many people have noted the premium price for the ES as compared to the loaded LX version. My only comment is that the leather seats dont create the "static cling" look on business suits and silk dresses. We are totally pleased with our purchase of this van and would strongly recommend it to anyone.

Transmission was replaced with less than 4000 miles on vehicle. Transmission still having problems. Dealer unwilling to resolve. Car in body shop being dismantled to attempt to resolve knocking sound. Over the last 2 months this car has been at dealer over 25 days. This car has the highest NHTSA incidence of consumer complaints. Would not have purchased this car if I had known.

I currently work for a multi-brand dealership that carries Ford, Mazda, Isuzu and Hyundai. I reviewed every model in this class of vehicle and found that for the money, I could not a better van with more options. The look and ride of this van almost make you forget you are driving a "mini-van"!

  • Good choice for small families. - 2003 Mazda MPV

The MPV is a best bet for a small family. The pick-up and handling are car-like and spritely for a minivan. The interior is simple, flexible and functional. Standard alloy wheels look good and help in gas mileage. The real opening windows on the sliding doors give the dog some air.

The worthwhile trade-off for less interior space is manuverability and handling. Features are useful but not excessive. (How many cupholders do you really need?) Compared to the lauded Odyssey and Chrysler vans, one wonders whether the automotive press (Edmunds included)assigns too much significance to size. Granted, size is what draws many to vans, but the 7/8 scale MPV is more than adequate for many. Plus, it has great reliability (beats the Odyssey and Sienna in the latest Consumer Reports survey) and sells for thousands under list. Do not be a sheep; there is life beyond the Odyssey.
