This Year's Model Updates:

The 2003 Jeep Wrangler gets a new trim level: the Rubicon. All trims have been bestowed with an all-new 42RLE four-speed automatic transmission which is supposed to provide smoother-shifting, better highway fuel efficiency and quieter engine operation at highway speeds compared to the previous three-speed automatic transmission. The SE trim gets a new NV1500 five-speed heavy-duty tranny, which promises to improve shift quality in cold weather, along with a new, more potent 2.4-liter Power Tech inline-four. Available four-wheel disc brakes debut this year, along with a new fold-and-tumble rear seat that can be more easily removed. Finally, the Wrangler's interior has been refurbished for 2003; it gets new front and rear seats, a new electrochromatic rearview mirror with map lights, temperature and compass display (standard on Sahara, optional on Sport and Rubicon trims), and a new four-spoke steering wheel.

Pros:
  • Cheap, fun to drive, classic styling, go-anywhere capability.
Cons:
  • Soft top a handful to manipulate, difficult ingress-egress, slow steering.

vehicle is fun to drive good visability because of height solid reliable vehicle(pulled out a few 9 inch tree stumps clearing yard) tires a little noisy when driving without radio on because of soft top top still tight enought after 1 year use to resist wind flap at high speeds

The best wrangler ever. It is an incredible improvement over my 97 TJ. With the hard top the ride is nearly silent(once you get used to the tire rumble.) The brakes are a massive improvment over the old disc/drum setup, but ABS should be offered, especially with the MT/Rs. Their wet road traction is not that great. The 4 wheel drive is incredible. I dont think i could walk that slow. The posi in the rear is great, and the lockers are even better. The new transmission is much better than the old one that was in my 97, but the throw is still quite long. The interior is classic jeep, simple, rugged, and functional.

I LOVE my Jeep. No other vehichle Ive owned has given me such a good feeling to drive. The Jeep just feels so right in so many ways. I took her out "wheelin" right after break-in period. I only took her on what wheelers call "the doe run", (easy trails), after all, it is a brand new vehicle. Only modification is bigger tires. (I really dont understand why they even put small tires on at the factory, it just isnt right on a jeep.) I was absolutely amazed at the obstacles I went over easily. After the 2nd worst winter in NYs history with it, and now a hot summer, I can truly say this is a vehicle for all seasons.

Im living in Alaska. Life is good in a Jeep. This vehicle has a soft top which makes it the perfect Alaskan convertible. I have had it for about 4 years now and have great experiences. Never stuck in the snow, never miss the sun, and it even tows my little trailer.

  • Dangerous on wet roads!! - 2003 Jeep Wrangler

I had my jeep for two months but had to trade it in because after SEVERAL close calls, I finally had an accident when it slid into the back of another car on wet roads. I have no doubt that had Id been driving a car, it would have stopped - there was plenty of room. Its also very difficult to see what other vehicles are doing when you are trying to change lanes and merge into traffic. On the good side though, it was a fun car and the a/c was excellent and got cold very fast.

This is my 4th Wrangler and it is a major improvement, in comfort and performance, without compromising the classic design.

Happy with everything except disappointed with the engine performance. It seems that the engine will backfire on a downshift once and a while. The Jeep dealer told me that someone else was complaining about it and that it was bad gas. So Ive tried different gas stations and Its still a problem. I suspect its a fuel management issue and is normal for very long straight inline six design. The horsepower is lacking for the size of the six and how much gas mileage you get out of it. I bought the Jeep for the power but 4 cylinder cars passed me in the Rockies. Technologically It seems behind the times, related to engine performance. Need some R&D for a factory installed supercharger.

  • Rubicon Squishes the Competition - 2003 Jeep Wrangler

My fiance and I decided to spend the extra cash and go all out with our new Wrangler and get a Rubicon. I have always driven a Wrangler and when it was time for a new vehicle I wouldnt have chosen anything else. The Rubicon has everything I would want in off road capabilities and when it comes to traveling, it handles like a dream. Smooth riding and a turn radius that cant be beat is just the beginning of the Rubicons awesome features. Worry free off roading in any conditions keeps the fun in driving this Wrangler beast. Looking forward to some great snow storms this winter!
