This Year's Model Updates:

Finally replacing the boxy Cherokee that has been in production since 1984, the handsome all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty serves as the affordable SUV in Jeep's lineup. Borrowing styling cues from the 1997 Jeep Dakar and 1998 Jeepster concept vehicles, the Liberty is available in two trim levels with your choice of two- or four-wheel drive, a four- or six-cylinder engine and a manual or automatic transmission.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, creative interior design, still a Jeep at heart.
Cons:
  • Thirsty at the gas pump, not as "car-like" as most of its competitors.

  • The Liberty Lives Up to its Jeep Brand - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have been driving my Jeep Liberty LE since June of last year. And i have loved it ever since. I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I was in an accident once; i was on a go stright or turn right lane and there was this other car on the turn right only lane... this guy went straight through as I turned right.. then there was a collision. I got out of my jeep and looked at his car, there wre HUGE dentations that ran accross his car (I believe it was a Honda). Then I looked at my jeep. At first glance, it seemed that there was NO damage at all. But on a closer look, there were a few measly scratches that none of my family could even notice. Now thats what i call strong.

We needed to replace a Jeep Grand Cherokee that got totaled in an accident. The Liberty was bought for myself and my 6 year old boy. Its great for us. I just wish there was lighting for the back seat, and the floor mats are a joke, I replaced them with slush mats. Most of all we like the fact that our 63" Dad and the two older sisters can come with us too, sometimes.

I love this SUV! I bought the limited edition with every feature you can imagine. It was worth every penny! There have been no problems so far. Yes, it does like gasoline, but who buys an SUV for mileage? The comfort level is extraordinary, both my husband and I are tall and large, this Jeep is wonderful!

The Jeep Liberty has proven to be very roomy for my family of 5. It rides smooth like a car on the road and like a truck off the road. It is has the pickup you need.

All around solid SUV, with decent gas mileage. Fun to drive and very capable off road, in sand, and in snow. Has the feel of quality engineering throughout. My wife, who drives it most of the time, is completely in love with her Liberty. The size allows her to park in a very tight area at work. I like the size for some off-roading we do; can fit between trees and in other tight places.

The 2002 Jeep Liberty is reliable and handles like a much larger vehicle. The turning radius is outstanding, as is the visibility. The access to fold down the seats for hauling is easy from either the rear or the sides of the vehicle. I would reccommend this to anyone who is considering an SUV that is not in need of its own zip code.

  • A GREAT BUY - 2002 Jeep Liberty

This Jeep handles like a Wrangler, a little stiff steering, but other than that, it has fair fuel efficiency, great handling, and great creature comforts.

My Libby is awesome! A very safe, dependable, responsive Sport Urban Vehicle that is an effortless joy to drive and to own. I am thankful everyday to I can never walk away without looking back at least once...

  • Almost Perfect - 2002 Jeep Liberty

My Honda CR-Vs performance at 60k miles was getting questionable so I traded into a used Liberty with almost every option. I really love it, as I am very picky. It handles well and has a powerful engine which makes driving it a hoot! It feels like an expensive luxury vehicle though it was quite affordable.

  • Tough Love - 2002 Jeep Liberty

I have had this Jeep for about 6 years and it has been fun. The only trouble that I have had is replacing the cam shaft sensor and O2 sensor ($78 max). I suggest getting a new intake system, the stock intake is heavy (15 lbs) and bulky. Also, to make life easier for the people who cry about fuel, just replace the fuel pump with a performance pump ($330) in order for you to be able to get what you want. I now get 27 mpg/19 mpg, and yes, thats on the 3.7 6cyl 4wd model.
