This Year's Model Updates:

The biggest news is the availability of the AdvanceTrac stability control system. All Windstars have sliding doors on both sides for 2002. Entry-level LX models get upgraded appearance items, and buyers of this trim can opt for the Autovision entertainment system and 16-inch alloy wheels for the first time. The short-lived SE Sport model is dropped, and SE buyers can no longer have leather seats. Four new colors freshen the outside of the Windstar.

Pros:
  • Top-flight safety equipment and ratings, plenty of interior features and options, powerful V6 engine.
Cons:
  • Disconnected ride and handling, poor interior space utilization, noisy V6 engine.

  • Power Steering issue? - 2002 Ford Windstar

After taking the van home with only 35 miles, I felt that steering gave me a strange feeling as if the gears are binding and front end is loose. The same symptons appears in another review.

  • Windstar: More Strengths or Weaknesses? - 2002 Ford Windstar

The Windstar is overall pretty average. The excellent crash test scores, and the standard powerful engine, are all big and important advantages. However, the Windstar has many fairly important and annoying disadvantages, like the noisy engine, poor handling and components, and slightly-too-frequent trips to the dealer, which make it fairly better than average. What makes it perfectly average is the lack of the cruise control option on the Base LX I spent about $3000 to upgrade to the Standard LX just for this, since the other extra features are pretty useless. I feel that it is cheap of Ford to do this, and perhaps it makes them lose customers.

  • Sorry in Seattle - 2002 Ford Windstar

We have owned the vehicle for 9 months and it has been in the shop 7 times. Suspension problems (A mysterious clunking noise in the front suspension that the dealership cannot seem to hear or find) have plagued us from the beginning. In addition, a wheel bearing and front strut has failed, we have experienced a broken parking brake handle, and now for the grand finale - transmission problems at 14,000 miles. This is by far the poorest new vehicle that I have ever owned.

  • vacation van - 2002 Ford Windstar

I took the van on a 1000 mile vacation the next day after purchasing the van. I was pleased with the performance and the interior room. My 4 and 1 year old kids loved the VCR.

  • Jury Still Out - 2002 Ford Windstar

Purchased just prior to new family addition. No journeys yet to see how it handles luggage load. For our around town its been fine. Gas mileage marginal, at best, around town. Missing thumb release button to disengage parking brake we realized the first time we got away from the dealer and used the parking brake. Stranded slightly temporarily--the dealer fixed in good time. Plan on updating review after more comprehensive use. We particularly enjoy the adjustable foot pedals and power side rear doors.
