This Year's Model Updates:

The Excursion's final year of production is 2004 so there are few changes from last year. Ford's excellent new 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8 replaces last year's 7.3-liter diesel. Besides offering considerably more horsepower and torque, the new engine has cleaner emissions and gets better gas mileage. Several new options are available; these include wireless headphones for the rear-seat entertainment package and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Body-side cladding and illuminated running boards are no longer available on XLT models. Also note that the trim level structure has been revised slightly, as base XLS and midlevel XLT trim replace XLT Value and XLT Premium.

Pros:
  • Substantial passenger and cargo capacity, impressive towing ability, diesel engine option.
Cons:
  • Unwieldy size, trucklike driving characteristics, poor fuel economy, high sticker price.

So far the diesel engine and all the other features have been tops. Only a few small glitches and three Colorado and 6 trips over 1500 miles with two under three year old kids and this is the way to go. Tuned the computer with micro chip and now get 21-22 miles per gallon on the highway--in this tank, what a way to go. Only had one adjustment early on the diesel and one tank of contaminated diesel which cleaned out just fine. You cant beat this for loading up and hitting the highway. Gets up and roars when the accelerator is pushed amazing for a vehicle this size.

I love the roominess and all its options, especially the heated seats and the radio controls on the steering wheel. Its roomy enough for me, my husband and my mother and everyone is comfortable and can see out. Ive taken two ski trips to Colorado and it holds all our gear and gets around in the mountains wonderfully. We get good use out of the DVD player with the dual features of using the DVD while listening to the CD player. Those 15 hour trips to Steamboat dont seem so long when you have "The Great Escape" playing on the DVD. 18.9 miles to the gallon traveling to Colorado. If you want a comfy, big, monster truck, this one is for you. This truck has it all, go get one and enjoy it.

Purchased this vehicle used with 21,000 miles. Bought it for the room and reliability of the diesel. To date the average fuel economy has been good at 18.7 mpg/average. Plenty of room and power. This vehicle has the dvd option that I would not have picked if the vehicle was not purchased used but found that the grandkids love it. So far no complaints.

I too traded in a 2000 Excursion for a 2004 thinking it was the last year. Never want to drive a smaller vehicle again. Greatly improved ride and quiter than the 2000 model. Improve the gas mileage and keep building these. They shrunk the Expedition and I dont want to go back to that! Need to keep building these!

This SUV can tow anything, haul the wife, 3 kids, dog, gear-and gets GREAT mpg. The truck is large, but its shorter than a 3/4 ton crewcab pickup. It gets much better gas mileage than a Durango with more space - WAY more. Although its a 3/4 ton, it rides smoothly, and talk about power - I towed my 27ft travel trailer from VA to FL at speeds averaging 65-70 mph and it never once kicked out of overdrive - and I got a solid 12 mpg out of it - the 2002 Yukon XLT I traded in didnt come close - about 7.5 mpg with less tow capacity. With no trailer I averaged almost 20 mpg HWY. I went 802 miles without filling up. Size, power, range, leather, DVD - its the dream SUV for any RV/Truck/Family guy

this is a great SUV, that is extremely utilitarian, and very powerful. Lights up the rear wheels with ease and a great trail rig. Took it with me, toured europe and the middle east. pulling up at a stop light and leaving other cars in the dust was great. Also i averaged a range of 700 miles per tank!! I highly recommend this SUV. The diesels rock!!

I cringe at referring to the mighty Excursion as an SUV since it is built on an F-250 frame, has a diesel engine option, tows up to 11,000 pounds, and performs like a truck. The Excursion is not a good choice for "around town" driving. But, if you travel a lot, and have a family or just stuff, the is nothing more practical than the big E. Three essential options: Four Wheel Drive, diesel engine, and the Trailer Tow Group. It doesnt make sense to spend the $ on this vehicle and not get 4WD. The 6.0L Power Stroke Diesel gets 20 MPG on the highway, accelerates well, and starts easily in the cold. The Trailer Tow Group has better mirrors and a rear stabilizer bar that helps in the wind.

I purchased in july 04 and have 5000 miles so far.Averaging 16.3 mpg.I replaced the shocks after 2 weeks with MONROE REFLEX shocks. I highly recommend this if you want the best ride and handling for this truck.Rubber mldgs on drivers side noisy. I put some back to black rubber treatment on them and noise went away.My daughter loves this truck so much she had to give it a kiss.Over 700 miles per tankful is a joy.
