Overview & Reviews
Additional standard equipment makes the 2002 Ford Escape an even better value. XLS models get a dual-media cassette/CD stereo, while XLT adds a V6 engine, privacy glass, power driver seat and an in-dash six-CD changer. New Sport packages also debut. The XLS Sport includes 15-inch alloy wheels with larger tires, side-step bars, Sport-embroidered floor mats and dark tinted privacy glass. The XLT Sport, new for 2002, provides, in addition to XLS Sport equipment, a special No Boundaries roof rack system and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with meatier rubber. Four new colors are also available.
- Strong V6 engine, comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, car-like road manners.
- Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unimpressive interior materials.

Nearly 130,000 miles with no problems - 2002 Ford Escape
By shihchi - November 12 - 9:48 pmHave 128,000 miles in 4+ years. No problems. Never back to dealer for any repairs or problems. Avg. 21-24 mpg. Still solid. Spent 4 years on construction sites with no ill effects. Used as primary family vehicle. Daughter hit a deer on spring break with it vehicle was A-OK, but deer wasnt. Still handles well and is quick. No complaints about CDs sticking or gear shift lever blocking access to anything. Large number cubbyholes are useful. Compared it to RAV4, CR-V and VUE. Escape was by far the best value and fun/comfortable drive. Wife, daughter and son all like it.

My Escape - 2002 Ford Escape
By 1stSUV - October 18 - 2:00 amThis is my first SUV and am loving it. It has great visibility, and handles very well in the snow. I have about 3500 miles on it and enjoy driving it. Easy to get in and out of it. My grandma enjoys driving and riding in it. Great for taking the kids out. Comfortable and spacious. Doesnt compromise the power by having better gas mileage than other SUVs. I highly recommend one!

Great little SUV!! - 2002 Ford Escape
By TJ#1 - September 25 - 2:00 amI have just under 10,000 miles on the 02 XLT Choice Escape and just love this little thing. It tows better than expected and gets amazing gas mileage. It has almost as much cargo space as an explorer, but has a much smoother ride and much better mileage. My ONLY complaint is the 4 wheel drive is a joke when you are realy stuck. Whatever tire is free will be the only one spinning.....

Sporty & fun to drive - 2002 Ford Escape
By Ron Christopher - August 31 - 10:00 amWe just returned from a 1,200 mile drive on vacation. This suv/truck/ sports car was an absolute pleasure to drive. We averaged a little over 20 mpg which is great for this strong V6. I highly reccomend the leather seating, the no boundries roof rack and the 16" sport wheels & tires, it`s gives the vehicle a little more class.

Rate this Vehicle - 2002 Ford Escape
By martina - August 10 - 7:06 pmI travel 50 plus miles a day in my Ford Escape. I find that it handles very well in very wet roads and in the winter I feel very secure in the manner in which it "hugs" the road, especially on curves. My V6 engine has great pick-up speed and right now I am averaging 28mpg. Since I am the main driver of this vehicle I have had very few opportunities to be a passenger, but I do remember driving to North Dakota from Iowa. I had the back seat. I found that being a passenger in the back seat was not the most joyful experience. There wasnt enough room for ones "tush." I had the feeling that I was always sliding down. I would definitely buy another ford Escape.

One of the best SUVs for the money! - 2002 Ford Escape
By dbj - July 13 - 10:00 amDespite some of the shorcomings such as: the gearshift on the console that interferes with radio/cd operation, and the quality of the front dash, I think its a great SUV!

Nice handling suv - 2002 Ford Escape
By MikeM - April 25 - 10:00 amHave had for two months now, continue to be impressed with the handling of this unit. Drives very much like a car. Wind noise around the A pillar is a bit of a pain, and the front seats could be a little more grippy. No major manufacturing defects have surfaced. One piece of rubber door seal has been a bit loose around the headliner area, but thats about it. Having test drove the Honda CRV extensively, this unit compares very favorably, particularly when you go to accelerate or take long crusing road trips. Strongly recommend the power driver seat as an option. Interior layout is very well thought out.

Decent Escape - 2002 Ford Escape
By Use It - March 1 - 7:32 pmHave 85K miles with no significant anomalies. Yeah, the usual CD sticking, wait till it cools down or use a credit card and itll come out fine. Still virtually all original parts including tires with decent tread still if you can believe that. This has been used off road a fair bit in serious snow and dirt, along with dogs/skis/bikes/canoes/kayaks/kids/lumber/rocks/bricks/etc. Have changed the tranny fluid every 40K or so and tranny is fine. Great vehicle so far. Good job Ford.
