This Year's Model Updates:

Additional standard equipment makes the 2002 Ford Escape an even better value. XLS models get a dual-media cassette/CD stereo, while XLT adds a V6 engine, privacy glass, power driver seat and an in-dash six-CD changer. New Sport packages also debut. The XLS Sport includes 15-inch alloy wheels with larger tires, side-step bars, Sport-embroidered floor mats and dark tinted privacy glass. The XLT Sport, new for 2002, provides, in addition to XLS Sport equipment, a special No Boundaries roof rack system and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with meatier rubber. Four new colors are also available.

Pros:
  • Strong V6 engine, comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, car-like road manners.
Cons:
  • Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unimpressive interior materials.

The 2002 Escape 2WD XLT Premium is a fun SUV to drive and has plenty of cargo space. The only complaint is the shift mechanism for the automatic gets in the way of the way of stereo controls.

  • What a blast to drive!!! - 2002 Ford Escape

I have owned a lot of so called "mini" Suvs but none as fun or powerful (with the V6) as I have with the Escape. My son and I go into the back country quite often to camp and fish, so I wanted something that didnt eat up gas and that would get us where we needed to go. The ride is car like so it doesnt beat you up getting to your favorite place yet has enough ground clearance for most off road adventures. I have had no problems with the mini brute but kinda wish it had been built on a frame. Overall, we love it and alot of people ask about it all the time.

  • Better than my previous Jeep Cherokee - 2002 Ford Escape

The Escape is fun, designed well, quiet, comfortable and handles very well. I was a solid Jeep person for 30 years until I drove the Escape. Better gas mileage, more for your money with a corresponding lower price. I paid more for my last Jeep Cherokee four years ago than I paid for my Escape and the options on both are about the same. I got the 4X4 XLT model which comes standard with a lot of options. The only real option that was on the Escape was the Mach stereo system which has 300 watts, seven speakers, and a 6 CD changer. This thing rocks! And the way the weather has been lately, I may still get to try it in the snow!

Brand new car. Ran into a snowstorm all the way from Ky to Chicago. Saw at least 50 cars in ditches but not us. A great, stable car.

  • Best option out there - 2002 Ford Escape

I just completed 6 months and 7500 miles with my Escape, and I still think its the best of the small SUVs. The ride is firm but not "truck-like" and the acceleration and handling are superb. I have found no defects and needed no repairs. I had an Explorer a few years back that turned out to be pretty crappy, so I was a bit concerned with buying another Ford. So far, I have been very pleased with the decision.

the ignition is placed really low on the steering column. it would be nice if it was in some way illuminated. you really really take a while to learn where to put the key even in daylight... youll hit above where the key goes about 90 percent of the time. other than that its fantastic.

I love it. The only thing I could ask for would be more comfortable seats. Truly a great buy.
