This Year's Model Updates:

Additional standard equipment makes the 2002 Ford Escape an even better value. XLS models get a dual-media cassette/CD stereo, while XLT adds a V6 engine, privacy glass, power driver seat and an in-dash six-CD changer. New Sport packages also debut. The XLS Sport includes 15-inch alloy wheels with larger tires, side-step bars, Sport-embroidered floor mats and dark tinted privacy glass. The XLT Sport, new for 2002, provides, in addition to XLS Sport equipment, a special No Boundaries roof rack system and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with meatier rubber. Four new colors are also available.

Pros:
  • Strong V6 engine, comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, car-like road manners.
Cons:
  • Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unimpressive interior materials.

Driver side window replaced and back driver side window replaced. The front driver side light cover still needs replacement.Purchased 2 new tires before 25000 miles they were splitting and next to bare. Hood latch was replaced. Brakes have been replaced 3 times and rotors twice less than 65000 miles on the vehicle back breaks are continuous coming out of allignment. Alternator went out with under 65000 miles on it. I love all the space. # road trips since Ive owned it. Twice with a child and her toys and once with four adults. We all fit comfortably.I also find it to be very comfortable for sleeping.

Sturdy, affordable vehicle with capacity to hold passengers comfortably. Ride is adequate for the price.

We bought this so that we would have a vehicle where we could carry our son and groceries at the same time. We also bought it for added safety as compared to our other car. We are very happy with it. It can really take off, the power is great. Only problems have been the stock tires, which we just replaced, and a repair needed on the throttle control. Of course this was not under the warranty and the dealer had it for 3 days for a simple fix. Overall we love our bright yellow Escape.

I have found this SUV to be all you could want or expect for the size and money. Handles great, good power, comfortable, clean profile. Very good A/c and heat, CD player and radio ( sound sys leaves something to be desired with windows down). Not a luxery SUV, but has all you need and more. CONs: cheap tires (Generals, which I had found to be good prior to this?. As stated, for the money, a very fine SUV.

Having owned a Mustang GT and a Taurus, I find the Escape a great combination of both. A sporty drive and room for people and stuff. It corners impeccably, yet the handling is forgiving. I have a 70 mile commute each day, and take road trips into the mountains. The Escape is at home on the highway and back roads, as long as they are paved. Since many of the parts are shared with a Taurus, I have had some of the same HV/AC problems with the Escape.

  • Good Compact SUV! - 2002 Ford Escape

This was my first truely "American" purchase (my previous car was a 00 Honda CRV), and other than a warranty- covered fuel sensor issue which caused the truck to stall at 40 mph, it has been a reliable, well-crafted, compact SUV. It has more than enough power and its fairly comfortable for my 64" frame. The 16-17 city-MPG took a little getting used to, but the 05 Hybrid is right around the corner!

  • Tale For The Tall People - 2002 Ford Escape

Can you say Headroom?!?! Being on the tall side the headroom is a key feature and the Escape has it..I had to go without the moon roof..I love the Escape XLT V6 being a first time SUV owner. I cant wait for the hybrid..It would be great to get 40 miles per gallon instead of 18-20..
