This Year's Model Updates:

Additional standard equipment makes the 2002 Ford Escape an even better value. XLS models get a dual-media cassette/CD stereo, while XLT adds a V6 engine, privacy glass, power driver seat and an in-dash six-CD changer. New Sport packages also debut. The XLS Sport includes 15-inch alloy wheels with larger tires, side-step bars, Sport-embroidered floor mats and dark tinted privacy glass. The XLT Sport, new for 2002, provides, in addition to XLS Sport equipment, a special No Boundaries roof rack system and unique 16-inch alloy wheels with meatier rubber. Four new colors are also available.

Pros:
  • Strong V6 engine, comfortable cabin, plenty of cargo space, car-like road manners.
Cons:
  • Lacks the off-road capability of a truck-based SUV, barely adequate base engine, shoddy build quality, unimpressive interior materials.

  • My first SUV - 2002 Ford Escape

Great for long distance as well as for commuting. Cargo space fits all the camping gear my partner and I need for an entire week of backpacking! Great sound system and a 6 disc in dash changer! A lot of neat options are available.

  • Excellent for the money - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

In 1 year I have had 3 engine problems (nothing major but still inconvenient). Performance wise, the vehicle is excellent. The acceleration is quick and it handles like a dream! The cargo room is adequate. The back seats fold down with little effort, its great. However, I do worry about the vehicles thin, light-weight doors in an accident. They dont seem very safe. You must get the center console, without it it feels as though you are going to fall out of the drivers seat.

  • Starting Problems - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

We love our Escape. Great V6 power. Plenty of room inside. A joy to drive. With 2235 miles ours failed to start. After 20 minutes it starts right up. Technician was on road test and it stalled on him-started right back up. Brought it back to dealer to check computer - no codes and wouldnt restart. Fords Technical Department told them to install new fuel pump. No problems since. It runs stronger than ever now. We still love our Escape but we now wonder!

  • Was never on my radar Screen - 2002 Ford Escape

I had been researching, shopping and test driving for about three months to repalce a leased saturn. I drove everything from an Acura RSX to an VW Passat. Three weeks ago I was shamed into visiting a Ford dealer by my Brother-in-law who makes a living building the Explorer. I drove the escape and much to my suprise it was almost everything I was looking for. With 200hp it preformed very well It has more than enough room in the back seat for even my 63" frame (my sons will all be at least my size in the very near future). and it has an impressive supply of after-market accessories to make it stand out in a crowd.

  • My 30 day review - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

Ive only been driving this vehicle for 30 days, so keep that in mind while reading. Overall, I am very happy with this SUV. Great acceleration with the V6. I test drove a Honda CRV and I thought the engine was going to burst while I was trying to merge onto a highway. No thanks. The Escape looks good, handles better than most cars Ive driven, and has plenty of interior room for being a "mini" SUV. There are only a few minor things I think should be improved, but if I could only pick 1 it would be the seats. They need to be a bit more contoured and supportive.

  • Needs higher quality material design - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

This SUV is fun to drive and handles well. The only thing I would be concerned with this little jewel of an SUV is the quality of material used to design of the vehicle. I would be willing to pay an extra $1000.00 if the interior components(Plastic, leather seats, etc..) were of higher quality and careful/attention to detail. Overall Ford has got a nice vehicle and I would like to see some improvements in the choice of interior material.

  • Bullseye! - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

Ford and Mazda hit it right on the money and many dont like it! This SUV had a rough start and many took advantage of initial problems and let them be known. I am a proud owner of a 2001 V6 XLT 4x4 in beautiful black. Loaded with stepbars, sunroof, bike racks, tint, 6CD changer the works. I take it skiing, fishing and tow my jet skiis. Granted, the interior needs a little updating but its no worse than a Suzuki, or Honda interior..

  • Ford Escape is Great - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

fantastic vehicle, very comfortable, the features of a full size SUV but in a compact package. Only bad feature is it is slightly top-heavy and thus prone to roll over if a sharp high speed turn is made. I have the full opion package with the leather seats and center console. Everything is really convenient. I will definitely buy another when the time comes

  • Engine just stalled after 8,000 miles - 2002 Ford Escape
    By -

I have a 2002 XLT Ford Escape with 8,000 miles. Today I was driving home from work and the engine, and battery lights came on. The power steering went out and the brakes barely worked. When I finally got the car to stop it died. Luckily I put it into park and it re- started. I am scared to think of what would have happened only 5 minutes earlier when I was on the freeway. I read a lot of bad reviews about the Escape and its stalling problems. I thought maybe it wouldnt happen to me, but it did. I am afraid to take it into the shop and have to hear them tell me that nothing is wrong. This is a real shame.

This is the best of both worlds!!! I drive mostly in the city, congestion, tight parking, etc... The Escape drives, and handles well, performs well too! Gas milage only about 18 (CITY) I did get 24 (HIGHWAY) ONE time! This vehicle has never been back for service, other than oil change, It is even better than the 2001, that I had, that was wrecked with 16K on it! My only complaints are small... I would like to see a lighted ignition switch, (Its hard to find at night) and I would like a little better ride, like the NEW Explorer! Definately the MOST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK SUV (in my opinion)
