"Best Car Dealer In La!"

I have bought a total of 5 vehicles from SM Motor Cars = 3 - Ford Explorers, a Toyota Camary & a RX 300 Lexus. They have "All" been Great, Dependable cars, that I bought "Below" Blue Book Value. In fact when I took My Last one - The Lexus, to my Credit Union to finance the Loan Officer asked "How did you buy this car for this price? She was so impressed that she went there and bought a car also!

We went into Santa Monica Motor Cars on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, after spending a lot of time the weeks before researching online, comparing prices, etc. We knew we wanted a used Prius, and Santa Monica Motor Cars had many that looked good with low mileage in our price range, but we knew that things often look better online than in person. We came prepared for a hard sell, for scams, add-ons, basically ready for all the nightmare scenarios associated with purchasing a used car. Michael is not that sort of salesman. He is as unpushy and patient as I can imagine a car salesman could be. The lot is fairly small, with only a handful of cars (mostly or all Prius?), and when we came in midday on Saturday, 3 of the cars we had been looking at online had already been sold. We looked at the other 2, and Michael also showed us a couple with add-ons like bluetooth and rear mirror cameras. The premium upgrade cars were a little more expensive than we wanted, and when we told him that, he did not try to pressure us or hard sell, he just brought us back to the ones we had been looking at before. We each took a test drive around the neighborhood, and Michael showed us how to drive the Prius, as we had never driven one before, and they are a bit different from a traditional car. He also took us on some bumpy roads being repaved, so we could feel how the car handled bumps and rough roads. The only thing we wished we could have done on the test drive was take it out on a highway, but Michael was working the shop by himself all holiday weekend, and couldnt go too far from it, in case other customers came by. I think it was probably a unique circumstance, as he usually has some employees on staff, but they were off for the long weekend. When it came to price, we had prepared to have all sorts of hidden taxes and fees to argue over, as many dealerships try to slip things in, but the only fees were the standard sales tax and license/registration, all within the legal range for California. We did try to negotiate the price a little, but the Labor Day sales price was already very low, actually the lowest we had found anywhere all weekend (we looked at 10+ dealerships and their Labor Day deals), at the very bottom of the Edmunds price range for mileage, make and year (Prius II 2010), and when he said he couldnt price it any lower, we knew we wouldnt find a better deal anywhere else. The carfax was clean, with only 1 previous owner, but we still wanted a pre-purchase inspection. This was a little tricky, as it was a holiday weekend, and we couldnt arrange a pre-purchase inspection until Tuesday, but the Labor Day sales prices were for the weekend only, and seeing as he had already sold 3 similar cars that morning, Michael was pretty sure he would be able to sell the one we were negotiating on within the weekend. We ended up writing a separate clause into the contract, that we would purchase the car in full, pending it passed the pre-purchase inspection on Tuesday. We signed the contracts and gave him the downpayment and left the car on the lot until Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, we took it in for the inspection, to Dave Frost Automotive, a local non-dealership auto shop with a great reputation for Prius repairs. The full inspection came up clean, with just a recommendation to replace the cabin air filter soon, and the tires, which are supposed to last 30,000-40,000 miles (22,000-37,000 for LRR), and the car mileage was 36,000+ with its original tires, so that was not unexpected. Anyways, the car checked out, and we took it home! Been working great ever since, just need to get new tires soon, but other than that, couldnt be happier. Buying a car is never easy, but Michael made it as painless as possible.

He’s very trustworthy and honest and the entire transaction was very smooth, easy, and hassle-free. In the two months since we’ve had our car, we have had no problems with it whatsoever. If you’re looking for a used car, definitely check this place out. They have a small lot, but what they have is very good and it’s an extremely well-run business in our opinion. I have experienced many used car sales people in my life who were high pressure, uninformed about the details of their vehicles, who wasted my time and were even dishonest. From our first conversation Michael facilitated my many questions and was polite and professional. I was never handed off to another sales person. Michael expedited the buying process and even found a lower interest rate loan for me than even my own credit union offered. I flew down from the Bay Area, test drove my car.. considered a second option on his lot , made my decision, and drove away happy all in about an hour and a half total from the moment I stepped onto his lot. I was looking for a car for my wife and found one of interest at Santa Monica Motor Cars. The problems was that I am in Colorado, which made the process a little scary. Michael was very professional and and accurate in describing the car - all the good and the not-so-good. He gave me information that I used to further research and he also took the car to the Volvo dealer for a full, independent inspection. The negotiation process was pleasant and not adversarial. The paperwork was processed quickly. When we received the car it was exactly as described. I am happy and my wife is excited with her new car.
