  • Good Enough - 1991 Ford Explorer

I bought this truck with 135,000 miles on it and it now has over 220,000. It is still going strong and is completely reliable. Mine has the 5- speed manual. Besides normal maintenance items (brakes, clutch, tires, etc.) I have had to replace both cylinder heads (they cracked - a very common known defect in this particular Ford engine) and the A/C condenser ($450). Besides that, no other repairs. I have off-roaded it many times and it has always done well. It doesnt have much pickup off the line at all. Mileage is crappy, at 14 city/20 hwy. With the new heads, it does not use a drop of oil, which is unusual at this mileage, so the bottom end of the engine is bulletproof.

  • Best car ever - 1991 Ford Explorer

I know raves about a 91 might not seem relevant to newer model purchasers, but I wanted to weigh in on the quality of Ford trucks. My family has never owned another brand. Im the original owner of this Explorer, it has over 210,000 (hard) miles on it, and the alternator -- which went out last winter -- is the only major thing Ive ever had to replace/fix on it. The power windows are starting to malfunction, but the ac/heater works fine, so I compensate. I want a new car, because Im starting to hesitate to take this one on long road trips (still 4x in it though), but feel duty bound to run it into the ground first. I might actually cry when I have to let it go.

  • It just wont die - 1991 Ford Explorer
    By -

I never thought the thing would be so reliable, but with over 200,000 I keep hoping that the thing will die so that I can get a new ride. It just keeps on running! Ive owned it for 5 years and 60,000 miles and have never had to replace anything major. Ive driven it on several 1000 mile trips. It has lots of little stuff wrong with it like the power windows and oil leak and engine tap (which is at least 5 yrs old too), but it starts up every time even when its 10 degrees. The fuel mileage on hwy is better than most new SUVs (22mpg), and the thing does real nice off road and its only a 2WD. Ive been in and out of many places in this thing that I should never have been it without 4WD.

  • One great truck - 1991 Ford Explorer

I bought mine for only $600. After I replaced everything in the front brakes and put in a new starter solenoid, the truck was awesome! The size is just right for my 63" height, styling is attractive, and the interior is well laid out. The OHV 4.0 litre V6 has plenty of torque to climb hills and power the 4500 lb. SUV off road. The fold flat seating is very handy and practically turns the back of the Explorer into a cargo cave. Since I bought it, the 4WD shift motor has gone out (a very common problem with Explorers and Rangers, but an easy fix). At this point, the next step is to only make it better with aftermarket suspension and accessories.

  • Still love it - 1991 Ford Explorer

I am one of those that will truly mourn the day I have to get rid of my Explorer (though my wife will not). I love the styling. I still love driving it. Perfect size in my opinion. When we drive into Boston, we prefer to take it due to relatively small size, curb hoping ability, age, and slow speed manueverability. I used to do a lot of off road and beach driving with it. Sure, its had its issues. Only 1 transmission rebuild in 320k miles. Original AC compressor is shot, fan motor is intermittent, 2 power windows dead. All in all, better then I would expect a car with 18 years and 320k miles would do. I have newer and nicer cars, but this is still my favorite to drive everyday.

  • I Love my Explorer - 1991 Ford Explorer

I bought my Explorer from a friend to have a vehicle to use for hauling, camping, etc. I now drive it all the time, I am almost at the 250k and this thing is still going strong, I did have a radiator leak, and had to replace the condenser, but I will drive this thing forever. I am a woman that likes new stuff, but I will cry when I have to give this one up.

  • The best vehicle I have ever owned! - 1991 Ford Explorer
    By -

My Ford Explorer is incredible! I have owned it for ten years now! It is a wonderful vehicle. As legend has it "Chuck" was one of the first manual transmission Ford Explorers to come off the assembly line back in June of 1990. The previous owner, a good friend of the family, heard from the dealer that this Explorers manual transmission was hand built. And talk about craftsmanship! With over 200,000 km on him (he was purchased in Canada) he is still on his original clutch! Amazing! Even more amazing considering I learned to drive a stick shift using him! He can haul cartons, kids, groceries and everything in between. And so easy for a do-it- yourselfer to repair!

  • 1991 that I cant get rid of - 1991 Ford Explorer
    By -

I bought my 1991 from a person who took good care of it for 2 years. Before that, a soccer mom thrashed it. I got it with180k miles on it and now has 203K, and it runs as strong as ever. I have had tranny work done, but come on over 200K most 1st generation 4runners have had engine and tranny transplants. Simple mods like a K&N filter, exhaust, and other cheap mods give it close to 175 hp. I can burn tires easily! Great truck!

  • Exploder - 1991 Ford Explorer

I still have my 91 Explorer along with 2 others just like it.. The vehicle is great! Its large for passengers, road trips, camping out, and off roading. It has 205,000 miles on the body. I rebuilt the engine at 193,000 miles and since I have owned it I have only replaced the mufler, alternator, headgasket, ball joints, and automatic 4x4 hubs. The vehicle handles fairly decent. lots of power for a 4.0L V6. Ride comfort is incredible! Massive amounts of intierior room! Off road it handles pretty good but its not recomended. You will lose $869 in hubs so please anyone who owns one change the hubs to manual locking ones. The whole spindle unit and all cost $256 total one time price!
