Overview & Reviews
The Excursion's final year of production is 2004 so there are few changes from last year. Ford's excellent new 6.0-liter turbodiesel V8 replaces last year's 7.3-liter diesel. Besides offering considerably more horsepower and torque, the new engine has cleaner emissions and gets better gas mileage. Several new options are available; these include wireless headphones for the rear-seat entertainment package and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Body-side cladding and illuminated running boards are no longer available on XLT models. Also note that the trim level structure has been revised slightly, as base XLS and midlevel XLT trim replace XLT Value and XLT Premium.
- Substantial passenger and cargo capacity, impressive towing ability, diesel engine option.
- Unwieldy size, trucklike driving characteristics, poor fuel economy, high sticker price.

Towing vehicle only... - 2004 Ford Excursion
By skierrick - January 14 - 7:59 pmBought this vehicle to tow a 32 ft trailer 8500 lbs over the east coast. Was getting 7mpg with a 2005 expedition, went to 17mpg on the excursion. Did have to replace the turbo, the injector 8 and a starter. But its the only 4x4 diesel suv on the market. If the truck survives a year, without more problems, Ill probably have it until the frame dies.

Bad Engine - 2004 Ford Excursion
By GW - October 21 - 2:00 amGreat truck except the 6.0L Diesel has a factory defect. The head bolts stretch. Blew a head gasket just before warranty was up. Over $5000 cost to repair. They remove the body to repair the engine which disturbs many electrical and other connections. Some owners have to pay after warranty is up. I like it but not sure I would buy another Ford after this engine. Check the internet before buying regarding this engine.

Limited 6.0 - 2004 Ford Excursion
By judoman - February 24 - 7:29 amHad a Suburban, but wanted a diesel, so i researched the Excursion and got the diesel. I do almost all highway driving, so went the first 120,000 on the original tires! The only was problem was the alternator that was $500. Now at @ 165,000, have minor problems from letting truck sit during the summer and using my Honda for gas mileage!

The BEAST! - 2004 Ford Excursion
By Raf - January 4 - 1:59 pmI bought a 04, Limited, Diesel Excursion. I LOVE IT!! YES the gas milage is bad and Yes it does turn like an aircraft carrier but I knew that going into it. I bought it to pull my 30ft travel trailer and my family of six down to Texas from Alaska. It did it with no problems!! I would recommend this vehicle to any large family (weather they had to travel or not).

The SUVs SUV - 2004 Ford Excursion
By CB - June 30 - 10:13 pmKing of the Road. Great SUV if you are going to be in the car alot. Fuel economy is not great, but also not bad when compared to closet rivals like Tahoe or Expedition. Only downside I see after owning for all these years is it is not the best car to maneuver around in stop and go traffic. Great on the highways and trips over an hour. If they made a newer one I would buy it. Would like to see a little better fuel efficiency maybe 15 mpg. Solid safety - I would hate to be in a car that impacts an Excursion.

Didnt test it enough - 2004 Ford Excursion
By heatgirlat26 - June 11 - 10:00 amI love the look of my excursion I like to drive it,but it just is not reliable,I have had it in the shop for many different things,It goes through break pads like crazy,I was really disapointed have always been a ford fan,I chose it over the suburban,I now am looking to trade it in because i have 4 children and I am afraid to put them in it,It does not stop like it should and when I put it in the shop they can never seem to find anything wrong.Ford tried to compeat with chevy but really lost this one,,,

Jacks Excursion - 2004 Ford Excursion
By Jack2427 - December 9 - 2:00 amThe 6.0L diesel is great gives excellent performance and on highway I get 19-20 MPG, in city gets 15-16 MPG. Drives like a truck-what it is. Feels secure on road at highway speeds. I will keep this vehicle as long as possible, is a great tow vehicle and carries a load besides. Downside is needs lots of room for U turns, is not a city commuter. I would buy another if they are available when this one wears out. Have had only one problem with a sensor in fuel system, fixed rapidly by dealer.
