This Year's Model Updates:

This long overdue redesign of the S90 counts several firsts to its credit: first with a transverse inline six, first with fully integrated GSM phone, first to carry an environmental specification (Europe only at introduction) and the S80 boasts the world's smallest manual transmission.

Pros:
  • Safety. Comfort. Performance of the S80 T6. Interesting styling.
Cons:
  • No wagon available - yet.

  • Just shoot it - 1999 Volvo S80

I bought this car because of the impeccable safety record in August 2002 and have had nothing but PROBLEMS since it left the dealership: Door locks and tail lights @ 35K miles; A brand new transmission at 36K miles; An ABS Sensor at 45K miles; Power Steering Lines @ 47K miles; and front suspension replaced at less than 54K miles. Fortuneately all this was under the extended warranty. Learned recently that my 40k car is only worth about 11K. Im not waiting for the extended warranty to expire next May. I am getting rid of this car NOW.

This car looks great, but it is the worst car for reliability that I have ever owned. I have been driving for 25 years. It is constantly in the shop for something. I know the local dealership service center employees by name! I am in the process of fixing an electronic problem and then am going to trade it in quickly before something else goes wrong next month. I will never buy a Volvo again.

  • Great car, but.... - 1999 Volvo S80

In the year Ive owned this vehicle, the ABS brake module, air mass sensor, engine mounts, tie rods, power steering stops, and a vacuum line had to be replaced. And the car only has 40000 miles on it. Other than that, the car has been excellent. Great performance, looks good, and drives well - when its not in the shop. I would highly recommend against buying this vehicle unless you have a second car and lots of money to spend on repairs/maintenance. Otherwise, just buy a Honda.

  • Volvos Reliability Vampire - 1999 Volvo S80

The Volvo S80 is a beautiful car with traditional Volvo virtues. Unfortunately it became apparent in short order that Volvo neglected to finish development before they released the car to market. The car is filled with substandard materials, and design, parts, and build defects. Clearly Volvo was more concerned with short-term profit than the welfare and retention of customers. While the car is a pleasure to drive when its working, its a short lived pleasure because the breakdowns are reliably frequent. Routinely shedding parts like a snake sheds skins, this car is a service nightmare.

  • Get used to BAD NEWS! - 1999 Volvo S80

This has to be the worst excuse for a "luxury" car I have ever experienced. Engine seals and gaskets replaced at 60,000 miles ($1,500)- Wheel bearings and tie rods replaced at 75,000 miles ($800) - Driver side power window fell off the track at 70,000 miles ($400) - Throttle sensor replaced 80,000 miles- ($1,200) Now I have more noises coming from the front end and I fear another trip to the Volvo dealer so I can pay $80+ an hour for them to fix this monster that they created. They are kind enough to give me a 10% discount on the repairs. What a relief!!? Never another Volvo in my future - could this be related to Ford now owning this once fine company? I will continue to spread the word!

  • OK if dealer supports - 1999 Volvo S80

Have had insurmountable problems with am radio reception which still is not fixed. Had transmission replaced at 50000 and some strut at 25,000. Some rattles. Is safe as I T-boned a lady who ran a red light at 35mph and felt I had been hit harder by my 12 year old son. The car took a punch but the overall experience with dealer and radio has made it less than desireable.

  • Paint it yellow and call it a lemon - 1999 Volvo S80

I was so excited when I first purchased my new Volvo. Even though it was a bit pricey, I was looking forward to getting 300,000 miles out of it. My first clue should have been when a position light message came on when I was driving it home from the dealer my first day. I have had multiple problems since that day. Under warranty the rings had to be replaced with <20,000 miles on it. I have spent thousands of $$ to try to figure out why my check engine light stays on. Over $4000 to have it fixed and 50 miles later the light came on again. Now my emissions light keeps coming on. 3 oxygen sensors later, it still comes on. Plan to put it in gear, run it off the mountain and collect the ins.

I bought this car right after my Son was born because I wanted a safe, spacious and comfortable car. 2 days later it wouldnt start and its been in and out of the shop over 10 times since. I have poured thousands and thousands of dollars into it and it continues to have more and more things wrong with it. I just last week had a new transmission put in and it has about 6 new things that need to be repaired. There is constantly an emission light/ check engine/service required light on and no one can ever seem to fix it for more than a few days. It has been one heartache after another. I would not recommend this car for anyone who wants to remain sane.

  • beware of the S-80 - 1999 Volvo S80

I just traded in my S-80 on an Acura. I will not own another Volvo. The S-80 was wonderful when it ran but was the most unreliable car I have owned. In 36 months, I had over 20 problems over and above scheduled maintenance. Most seemed to be related to computer problems, and fuel pumps. The car would die at inopportune times. Sometimes it would restart - sometimes not. I lost faith in what should have been a premium automobile.

  • Not Worth the $$$$ - 1999 Volvo S80

After way too many problems (literally, too many to list) I traded in my S80 T6 for a Passat. After getting over the intial shock of trade in value - $30,000 less than sticker price (the car was loaded to the hilt and had 56,000 miles, I knew that I didnt have a choice. With my warranty up and still having massive problems, I had to get rid of it. My new Passat has everything that the Volvo had except the Nav system and horsepower and the best part - it cost me half the price! I love my new car!
