Only a year after debuting them on U.S. shores, Volvo has updated the S40 and V40 for 2001. Both the sedan and wagon gain additional crash protection in the form of standard head-protection airbags, dual-stage front airbags and a new child seat-safety system. Under the hood, engine improvements have been made to increase power and lower emissions. There's also a new five-speed automatic transmission that takes the place of the previous four-speed. Other changes are found in the cabin, with new material colors, a redesigned center stack for better functionality, more durable front-seat materials and improved switchgear. Rounding out the S40 and V40's 2001 changes are restyled headlights, bumpers and fenders.

Poor Mans BMW - 2001 Volvo S40

Suspension is nice and tight with a feel that inspires confidence, but in cold MN winters it gets a little rough. Drives like other European sedans (Audi A4, BMW 3 series). I did have some problems with rear drivers side door locks, but easily fixed. Did also have problem with fuel pump. Both would have been pricey, but I bought an extended warranty - which I would recommend. Minor finish issues also with drivers door console, but that was fault of prior owner. Gas mileage is a little low in the city, but on the freeway at 75 it still gets 30-32 MPG. Overall, it is a very fun car to drive, very sporty, looks nice w/spoiler, fairly reliable.

Love my S40 - 2001 Volvo S40
By LizAnd - January 17 - 10:00 amGreat car for a long commute! This car is so responsive and tight. My husband drives a 2002 Passat, and recently drove my car on a long trip. He could not get over the quick acceleration and fun ride. His car is an absolute slug in comparison. I also get about 5 more MPG on the freeway than he does. Its a little small on the inside, but perfect for my needs, as I rarely have passengers. I wouldnt recommend it for a family sedan, but as a DINK car (double income, no kids), it really fits the bill. Reliability has been excellent, and service at my dealership is so stellar, I wouldnt dream of taking it anywhere else.

Great Bang for the Buck! - 2001 Volvo S40
By Eduardo - November 28 - 9:40 amIf you take care of this car, it will love you back. Ive had only 1 minor electrical problem in 6 yrs. The car has zip, gets great gas mileage and is the safest car in its class. Airbags everywhere. The seats are the most comfortable of any car. Huge trunk. Stops on a dime and is a blast to drive! Much more fun and safe then any of the Japanese cars Ive owned - Camry, Maxima.

Great Vehicle - 2001 Volvo S40
By Keith - April 7 - 3:16 pmWell, now I have 150,000 miles on it, yes, 150K! I dont know what people are talking about but I have not had a single issue with this car yet! I got it at 81K and knew that it would last, and it did. Yes, the cup holders are awful, but if you are like me and not like to have picnic in your vehicle, you will be just fine. I still average 28mpg with the ac running here in San Diego. If this car goes to junk, I would buy one again for about 7000 bucks. Beats buying a Civic as these are very very safe cars. The only issue I had was to change the coil wire which ran about 70 bucks! Just go and buy one, if it feels good, then it must be the right car.

By sallie - April 1 - 10:00 ami test drove the bmw 3 series, the acura cl, and the audi a4. i chose the volvo because of the way it handled. i also felt as though the vehicle was more substantial--less glass and more metal.

By volvo for life - October 27 - 6:46 pmI must say, from someone downgrading from a 2000 BMW 3 series this is an awesome car. Its very reliable, fast and handles like a race car. You can keep up with any car on the road with ease. The steering is very quick and responsive for a Volvo. I read and saw that many people did not like the cup holders, but i do, because i think its different. Although i am grateful to have this car, i must say i wish the suspension was a little firmer and not as soft, but hey it still handles great!

By Volvo for Life - March 21 - 10:00 amI do agree with some people here.If you buy a fully loaded model topping $27800 with all the options you dont want to have any problems and glitches like burning lights or brakes.It is still a best deal in the used sport luxury european sedan category.You have to drive normal and dont abuse it.I love this car,but you have to lubricate brakes ,especially if you drive in salty,cold weather.Handling is superb.Once again you have to buy them used for $9700-11500 range to really enjoy it.It worth this money all the way.Luxury European small sports sedan.

LOVE IT - 2001 Volvo S40
By g75401 - October 30 - 10:00 amI bought my S40 to be a work car. I drive 90 miles round trip, mostly highway, and wanted a car with better fuel economy than my Expedition. So far, the Volvo fits the bill. Its very fun to drive and gets great gas mileage. I compare it to a Scirroco VW I had in the early 80s...very peppy without the requirement of needing to sleep in the back seat overnight on the side of the road due to breakdowns!!! Plus, my stepson has already informed me he likes it more than his dads S60!!

By volvospd - August 13 - 9:33 pmBought my 01 s40 with 25k on it in 06. Inow have 123k. This car has been my favorite car. Its sweet looking, comfortable, fast as well u know. I average 35 mpg I use moble 1,93 octan and perform maintenance as suggested. I have had only one problem and it was my fault. I had to replace the fuel pressure regulator. I kept loading my fuel lines before starting the car. It was not expensive to replace at all just a couple hundred bucks at the dealer. Love this car I want one for every day of the week.
