This Year's Model Updates:

For 2006, Volkswagen had planned on introducing a new 3.6-liter V6 engine and bringing back the diesel-fueled V10. However, the V6 has been shelved until next year's model, and the V10 will debut very late in 2006. Therefore, the only significant change to the Volkswagen Touareg is the addition of a new rearview camera feature and auxiliary multimedia connector to the optional navigation package.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, true off-road capability, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Lousy fuel economy, smaller backseat than competitors, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Dishonest maker - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

This is my 2nd Touareg by default, the first one had so many electrical issues that I took it back to the dealer and refused to pay for it any longer. So being the generous automaker/dealer they decided they would let me out of that lease but only if I would resign a lease with them for the NEW AND IMPROVED 2006 Touareg. I did, I really liked the look and the way it handled. The 2006 version has been a nightmare, first the noise caused by some unknown vibration, dealer fixed by adding foam behind the dash, then when I complained of the continued vibration I was told it was my tires. I replaced my tires it improved put did not fix. Brakes bad, ridiculous cost to replace but its not just the

  • Beautiful, but Ugly Gas Mileage - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

Overall I love the truck...but I am finding some of the features difficult to use like the trip computer and even the a/c. The Volkswagen Touareg drives awesome though and makes up for the few shortcomings stated above. I havent taken it up to the mountains yet, but I intend to go up next weekend and I will write another review at that time. Oh, I almost forgot about the terrible gas mileage 13 mpg. VW needs to offer the Touared in front wheel drive to improve the gas mileage.

  • TDI...Great Towing, Comfort & Power! - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

This is my second Touareg. The first was a fully loaded 2004 V8 which I really loved. It replaced my Range Rover Classic. Did everything the Rover did, for $20K less and towed better too. With 100K miles on the V8, I figured I would take advantage of the current discounts on the 06 TDI. The vehicle is identical except for DVD navigation on the new one and of course the V10 twin turbo diesel. The V8 was very fast, but this thing flies. Better yet is the fuel economy.

  • Best Vehicle Ever - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

The Volkswagen Touareg is just plain fun. I got it recently, but already drove in the snow up to Lake Tahoe and went up winding highway 1 north of SF. The ride is just awesome, it has great handling, is easy to control, and is very comfortable even going through those curves. I got the blue silver which has a more silvery color at night and more blue color during the day. People turn their heads when you pass! My buddy said my truck was so much better riding and looking than his (Mercedes ML350). The ride is also very quiet which is great when you like classical music or soft jazz.

  • atrocious brakes - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

In less than 20,000 miles of city driving it is necessary to replace front and back brakes at a cost of $1800.00. This is considered normal according to the service department. I have driven SUVs for 20 years and have never had to replace brakes. Volkswagen offers no assistance and only warranties for 12,000 miles, which is useless. I would warn any potential buyers of the Touareg that they can expect a $1800 brake expense every 12-20,000 miles.

  • Many improvements on the 06 Model - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

We had am 05 Touareg, which was our was worst nightmare, a total lemon. VW bought it back and gave me an 06 model. I have just about every option. My favoriate option is air suspension, its great for off-roading. This vehicle is very good off-road and in the snow The DVD navigiation system is much better than the 05 models CD navigation, it is a night and day difference. I have had no problems with my 06, nut the 05 was total debacle. Im definately on track to buy another one in a year or two, based on how my 06 has been so far.

  • Tons of fun - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

I love driving my Tdi Touareg daily. It is a blast; tons of torque and hp which makes it a lot of fun. We put the car on a rolling chassis dyno to see what it would do and how much power and torque it would lose through the drivetrain; from the engine to the tires. We were pleasantly suprised. It is rated at 310 hp and 554 lb-ft at the motor so I thought it should put down somewhere around 250-260 hp and 460- 485 lb-ft of torque at the tires. The dyno results surprised us all to say the least; 299 hp and 548 lb-ft torque at the tires; damn near matched the power ratings which were listed as at the flywheel. It is very difficult not to drive it with your foot to the pedal. Brakes are super as well. Super!!

  • Loving it! - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

I purchased my Touareg three week ago, and I absolutely love it. It’s fun to drive, and it feels great. The interior is second to none. I considered several other SUV’s in it’s class, and the Touaregs interior was far superior. I do however, wish that it had slightly quicker acceleration, which I hear is obtainable with the V8. I also would have liked to have had an optional third row seat. The Toureg is more spacious than some of its competitors as a result of leaving the third row out. So, that’s a toss up. Even with the three rows down in some of the other SUV’S it felt congested. There is no congestion in the Toureg. The only downside to purchasing the Touareg is the frequent trips to refuel. GO FOR IT.

  • New Used VW Owner - 2006 Volkswagen Touareg

I made the switch from a BMW 328ci to a big (for me) SUV. I bought this car used and I havent owned it long, but Im already in love. I guess Ill have to write again when Ive put on more miles. It handles superb on the highway and in the snow. This car is smooth making it hard to keep it anywhere near speed limit. I looked at many other "high class" SUVs, but I had to go with the poor mans Cayenne. I felt spoiled by all the unbelievable extras in the V8 Touareg. Theres no way I could get this car new. It amazes me that a VW could go for so much, but used its a great deal. Plus, unlike other vehicles, its nice to have a car that few people have and get many compliments.

I love the Touareg. I love the way it drives and love the interior. BUT it has been in the shop every two weeks since I bought it (all electrical issues). to top that off the dealership here has treated me terribly.
