This Year's Model Updates:

The Touareg's standard V6 engine goes from 220 hp to 240 hp. The optional navigation system will change from CD-based to DVD-based later in the model year. The formerly standard tire-pressure monitoring system is now optional, and satellite radio is available across the board. A self-dimming rearview mirror debuts this year, along with newly styled 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, true off-road capability, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Lousy fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

I purchased my Touareg in Jan 2004, and by November had had it in the shop for more than one month. AC repeatedly loses freon, they cant find the leak. Ive had the wiring harness replaced, battery replaced due to repeated shorts in the electrical system. Compass sensor and compressor replaced.I have to carry jumper cables in the car, never knowing when it will fail to start. When the electrical is dying, numerous faults will come on and auxiliary systems will begin to be shut down. This is still unresolved. I contacted VW of America and requested a replacement vehicle, they offered to, and did, reimburse me for two months car payment. Im still working thru my states lemon law.

Touareg with V8 is fun to drive, zippy in traffic, handles well in snow, a solid well built car with a good smooth ride for all time 4WD I do miss the the larger cargo space from trading from larger SUV- Tahoe. Minor problems with dash warning lights Fuel economy average at 14.7 mpg and it requires Premium gas. Lead foot with the V8 might be the problem!

Great SUV to drive. There was no question after test driving the 4Runner & Jeep which was the best vehicle for the money.

  • Amazing machine - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

Just bought a used 05 V-8 with 5200 miles a couple days ago. I looked at 3 dealerships in the Atlanta area before settling on the Silver/Grey model as it is in almost new condition. Although it did not have as many extras as the 04s I saw and drove this one clearly stood out to me. The fact that it was the last day of the month,a Monday and raining I felt would help with negotiations. It did. The feel of this Luxury sporty SUV is upscale all the way, fit and finish excellent and performance that is most enjoyable to experience. only dig is hard drivers seat bolsters. Maybe itll soften with time. Great ride! I compared and drove FX-35, MDX, 4Runner and this stands way above.

  • Do Not Buy! - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I have owned my Touareg for just over one year. At 15,000 the brakes went down to the rotors. It cost $1,000 to fix. This truck is very poorly made inside cant handle kids at all. Ive had too many problems to list. I will be trading it in very soon! Also, it gets very bad gas mileage. It has lots of squeaks and rattles inside. The wood is cracking and the rubber is peeling on drivers door. This is a very sad vehicle.

Solid, well made German SUV with good handling for the most part. V8 gas mileage is a blended 15. Always has been hesitant off the line, but plenty of power once you are moving, great feel for a driver. Comfortable, well designed. Like the look, like the drive. Interior leather, wood appointments nice, luxury feel. For the money, this is a good luxury SUV, same new platform as Porsche Cayenne. Mechanically well built and doesnt wear out.

  • Great vehicle-lousy on gas - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

Maybe due to weight (5700 lbs.) and AWD, the gas mileage is closer to 10 city/15 highway. Smooth ride with comfortable seats. Fair amount of cargo space. Rolling control on steering wheel for information display can be confusing to use.

My 2005 Volkswagen Touareg V6 AWD is fun to drive and has excellent handling. It is beautifully engineered. The rain-sensing wipers are a very poor idea though. The computerized comfort options are good, but the computer often resets itself with its own ideas. The only reason I would not buy another one is the high cost of routine VW dealer maintenance.

  • Piece of CRAP car - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I would not recommend this car to anyone who is not a millionaire with money to burn and likes to have their car in the shop at least once a month. We bought this car brand new, zero miles on it and had to bring it into the shop within the first month. It was all downhill from there. Every mechanical piece on the car was replaced under warranty (which we extended to five years immediately) except for the motor, which I am sure would run forever while all the other peices of the car fall off all over the road. Sadly, I had to buy a back-up car so I had something reliable to go to work in and had to carry a battery for the key in my purse, because you never knew when the car would not unlock.

  • Great Truck - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

This has been a great truck. It drives great and very comfortable. Its not like any other SUV. It handles better than most cars. I manage to get about 19-20 mpg on the highway. Its no econo-car, but its not too bad considering. Compare that to a Lincoln Navigator. If you want to drive this vehicle in anything other than gas-miser mode (or pass someone), you need to switch the transmission from "D" to "S" or shift manually.... which is fine for me considering current gas prices.
