This Year's Model Updates:

The Touareg's standard V6 engine goes from 220 hp to 240 hp. The optional navigation system will change from CD-based to DVD-based later in the model year. The formerly standard tire-pressure monitoring system is now optional, and satellite radio is available across the board. A self-dimming rearview mirror debuts this year, along with newly styled 18-inch alloy wheels.

Pros:
  • Upscale interior, polished road manners, true off-road capability, solid construction, lengthy standard equipment list.
Cons:
  • Lousy fuel economy, not a lot of room in the backseat, no in-dash CD changer.

  • Fun to Drive, Annoying Quirks - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I have owned this car for a year and a half and it is a blast to drive. It begs "drive me faster." The keyless entry is great. The beeps are so anoying though, like the selt belt, passenger air bag off, and others. If I run into a store my wife has to bucle the seatbelt to make it stop dinging. The VW service department where I purchased my car is terrible. I needed new tires after only 6,000 miles, and my car cant stay aligned. So it has great performance, but the misc. problems make me want to sell it.

  • Outclasses the Rest - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I live in Tokyo. In Japan base models come much better equipped than in N. America. I added an air suspension and leather package and only major thing missing is the s-roof & navigation. Ive owned the Lexus RX (its a Toyota Harrier in Japan - which changes your mind quickly about how luxurious it is!) and the Mercedes-Benz ML 320. The Touaregs quality through and through outclasses these cars and many others I have tested. I have not had the problems many have written about (luckily?) and except for the V6 being a bit gutless this car is fun to drive (especially in sport shift mode and sport suspension!) and costs half as much as the Porsche Cayenne (no air suspension offered on base V6 there!). Off-roading was great as well!

  • Over engineered - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

VW has come late to the SUV market, great design, good funtion and a surperb off road vehicle. Here is what they do not tell you about the 2004 SUV of the year! Electronics are overengineered as it relates to warning drivers on a faulty tire presure system, seat belt chimes that do not allow drivers to leave the car running with out being cherped to death, radios with on-board map system must be cleared everytime you start the car by excepting the disclaimer "release/acceptance" button! Something to look forward to for as long as you have your vehicle. One of the best dummy warnings is the airbag warning, buzzer, then bell/chimes to tell you it is off

  • A car for all seasons - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

This is the most pleasant and versatile car I have ever owned. It rides like a limo on the road and takes to the field like a John Deere tractor. The V6 has enough power to get there and pass when needed but if you want a hot rod get the V8.

Same comments as most of the others: Great highway ride, strong V8 performance, Best turning radius of any car I have ever owned. Handles very well. Nicely appointed interior, comfortable seats. Downside: the brakes for wear and this car is very difficult to be smooth when driving, at very low speeds the brakes grab and the throttle response is jerky. Poor Gas mileage Overall the car has exceed my expectations and most of the bugs from the 2004 models we worked out.

  • Awesome - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

I love my Touareg! It had a few issues early on but were fixed as necessary. It is heavy and all wheel drive, so its tough on tires. I ditched my factory tires at 11k miles for a set of Nokian WR G2s and havent looked back. Really the best tire for the Touareg. I had an Expedition previously, so gas mileage wasnt an issue. The FSI V6 and V8 on the newer models are a significant improvement over 2004-2007 models.

  • Who even knows? - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg

After already going through one Touareg, Im onto the next. My 2004 was replaced under the lemon law due to transmission problems and I received my 05 this past May. After driving the car for 3 months I noticed hesitations and horrible clunking noises during up/downshifts. The transmission in this car is downright scary. I have pulled out into intersections with plenty of time and the car hesitates and then takes off like no other. It is almost like the transmission has to think for a few seconds before it does anything. Sensors and warning lights going off at all times for no reason and horrible OEM tires. So far so good with the 2005, but stay away from the 04s.

  • Tourag for people who diidnt buy this - 2005 Volkswagen Touareg
    By -

This is by far the best suv we have ever had (6 to date). It is elegant and the v8 delivers more than enough power. highly recommended. complaint is teh navigation system is not on par w/ bmw or lexus and the roof racks cause wind noise at high speeds (we removed teh racks, teh car looks better without them). But the car is awesome, great ride and teh interior can not be beat
