  • Will always be my favorite and possible only type of car!!! - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Awesome little bug! It can carry a lot even three dogs, nice spoiler,(not a surprise it comes out at 90mph) great mileage have gotten 40 on highway, very small and compact but still a lot of head room. PS: Very strong panels. Ran into a van, van got a dent but no scratch on the beetle.

  • Worse than the first - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Noisy. Slow. Unreliable. Cheap interior pieces. Grossly overpriced. Youd think I was talking about a Hyundai? Nope. Were talking about the "new" Beetle, which is a more miserable experience than the "old" Beetle. Every emissions control piece has failed. Switches break. Bottoms out in car washes. Recalls. More interior rattles than cars 1/3 the price. Of 10 cars, this is the worst Ive ever owned.

I needed a commuter car. I bought my yellow bug used at 100K km. I now have 380K km on it. I replaced the clutch about 40K ago, upgraded to a racing clutch without the double throw. The car has has brakes at the normal interval, had to have have the AC repaired last year after 12 years service. Everything else works great, I hope to get 500K on her, the only issue I have is the running boards are too easy to rot out... but its a cheap fix. Im now looking for another TDI for the wife... BTW I drive it like I stole it and average 53-56 MPG Oh yeah, women seem to like the yellow beast.

  • VWs have problems - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

I have taken my car to the shop SOOOOO many times. It constantly has electrical problems and does not qualify for the lemon law. When i go into the shop there are always other angry VW drivers there regretting purchasing this car as I do. Dont get suckered in by its cuteness. These cars will break.

Mechanically the worst car I ever owned. Nearly doubled the purchase price in repairs in 2 and a half years. Big bummer.

  • Cute but crappy - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Took it in the next day after purchase to service the driver window because it didnt want to go up.The interior melts in the sun.Switches in the car fall off, like window switches. Cupholders detach therefore, i have a big orange juice stain on the passenger floor.Replaced both headlights at least once every year, very expensive, due to labor.VW made it difficult for customers to do themselves.Head of car hit pavement going over bumps.Forgot how many times I took it to get something fixed or replaced.AC filter needed to be cleaned within the 1st year and VW charged me for that. Hubcaps fell off in the 1st year of ownership.I hate this car.Even my Sentra from the 80s treated me better.

  • Nice to drive but High maintenance - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

This car is great to drive but has had many things break. Many problems with the emissions system and the mass air flow sensors. Also problems with the windows not working right and going off track. This been extremely frustrating and inconvenient, but it has never left me stranded.

  • Could be greatly improved - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

    1) Head rests dont come up far enough for a tall person (Im 6.2) 2) Sun shades should have sliding attachments, also better "sunshade -- center mirror" shape interaction, so that sun light doesnt get in through so easily when sun at right front. 4) Should have more room for the right knee. 5) Tighter suspension for the turbo version (car wabbles easily when stopped and a car passes next to you at fast speed). 6) Wiper for the back window 7) "Check engine" light should provide a number or letter code, so that owner can look up whats wrong. 8) Should be a little more silent in highway, there is quite some road noise at high speed.

  • Mind of Its Own - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Heres what I went through in the ten months that I owned my bug before trading it in: 2 new alternators ($400 each), 4 new tires ($450 for all), getting stranded b/c the battery was dead all the time, new front brakes ($300), and then, the mother of all, in one weekend- oil change that led to $800 repair for hose that kept engine cool, $900 for new timing belt in the engine, and the guy also told me it would need a new front axle. I said forget it, so I traded it in the next day for a 2006 Hyundai sonata which drives like a Lexus!

I love my Volkswagen New Beetle, and I am thinking about buying a new one when I graduate from college this May. My parents and I bought the car used almost a year ago, and I have few complaints so far. I love the cars styling - very distinct and has a nice, techno feel. It offers a lot of luxuries that most cars in its class do not. Overall, it is pretty reliable, too. I have, however, had one very significant problem: my A/C system just failed, and it had to be replaced. I have an awesome independent mechanic, though, and he fixed it for about half of what the dealer quoted me.
