I love my Beetle, HOWEVER little things keep breaking. Cosmeticly inside the plastic materials used were just cheap... the visor mirror cover broke off completely so now the visor light is always on, the hande to the glove box completely broke off, can not access glove box, pieces of plasitc from the drink holders have chipped out, even in the backseat which is rarely used. The CD player stopped working, the sensor inside the drivers side door is on the fritz, I have to unlock the car door, then press lock on the remote to lock the door. When it rains, the trunk will not shut, now the door on the gas tank wil not open, had to pry it.. my list goes on...

Its fun to drive but once you hit 40,000 get out your checkbook. Multiple electronic/sensor repairs, recalls and broken gadgets (fuel flap, armrest compartment latch etc...). When talking to other Beetle owners the same complaints were made. Would I buy another-no. Not reliable.

I love to drive my Beetle. Great handling and driving dynamics. Very spacious up front but only enough room in the back for small kids (they love to ride in a bug). Huge cargo space in the trunk with the rear seat down. Great ergonomics, every single control is with in your fingertips. It is a car for people who love to drive. Some may say that it needs more rear room but the Bug is what it is a small sporty car, not a family car.

Has been an OK car. Wish I had my reliable Jetta back. Have had to 1) Take to dealership for oxygen sensor recall 2) Have the Piston rings replaced - major problem with oil loss. Thankfully, still under warranty 3) Gas door latch had to be replaced 4) Door started to fall off hinge. Dealer told me they have had lots of oil loss problems and everyones gas door has to be fixed.

I bought my Beetle new and Ive loved driving it from day one, but I have to say the first 10,000 miles were mostly spent at the dealership. Granted, most was covered by warranty, but what a hassle!

  • Most Fun Lemon Ive ever had - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Bought my 2000 Volkswagen Beetle as a certified used vehicle for my wife to replace her 1999 Passat wagon (the 1st VW lemon we owned). I swore Id never buy another VW, but she loved it, and this was a manual, instead of an automatic transmission, which gave us so much trouble in the Passat. This car is an absolute blast to drive. Unfortunately, VW quality is poor, and VW service is abysmal. We have had numerous electrical and drivetrain problems with this car. We have thorougly described and documented all of the problems, and have been told by the dealer that they dont exist. We have replaced too many parts to list. When I complained about the turbo spoiler not working automatically at 90+, the dealer told me not to go that fast (then why offer the feature?).

My only problem with the car was when it was two days old. I had an electrical problem where the windshield wipers would go on, the emergency flashers would activate, and myriad other electrical impossibilities. It took 3 weeks to get it back to me... problem; a bad ground in the headlight. Since the day I got it back, it has been problem free. I really enjoy the spirit the turbo GLX displays and only now, after two years, have come to drive it a little more sensibly. My two biggest complaints are the useless cup holders and the reception on the radio, which is really bad on the AM side.

  • Bad Decision - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Bought this car used with only 26,000 miles on it. It has always been very fun to drive and the handling is great (except in the snow). But the reliability is the worst of any car I have ever owned, and I have had some bad ones! The list of problems includes the permanantly on check engine light, replaced fan control unit at 65,000 miles, air bag problems, broken fuel latch and trunk latch, knob for mirrors fell off, broken arm rest latch, steering rack replaced twice, air conditioner went out at 68,000 miles, broken knobs on the stero, some dash lights are burnt out, etc. I could go on and on forever. And NOTHING on the car is inexpensive to fix. It even requires premium gas because of the turbo. Dont make the same bad decision I made.

  • VW Beetle-Air Conditioning problem - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle
    By -

I purchased the car 10/01 and in 6/02 discovered the air conditioning didnt work. Neither the dealership nor VOA would do anything about it. There were 2 major leaks-one in the AC Compressor and one in the Evaporator Core. Cost to fix $1800+. The warranty was only for 2 yrs. or 24,000 miles and I was told I was JUST out of warranty.

I have had no problems with my New Beetle. The Turbo can really throw you down the road and it makes driving fun again. I bought this after a friend told me that she loved her Beetle and had no issues. She went out and bought another convertible Beetle not too long ago.
