This Year's Model Updates:

Optional 17-inch alloy wheels can be ordered on GLS 1.8T and GLX models. Exterior mirrors are larger, high-intensity discharge headlights and a Monsoon sound system are available, and all New Beetles benefit from redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. Rain-sensing wipers and a self-dimming rearview mirror now come on GLX models.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, excellent crash-test scores, affordably priced, turbo model is fun to drive.
Cons:
  • Compromised rear seat/cargo capacity compared to Golf, could use a stiffer suspension.

  • Best car I ever owned! - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Husband & I bought this great diesel auto on a whim . Traded our 4 Runner in on it and Ill drive it till the wheels fall off. We get 50 MPG and will pass anything on the road. Has a manual tranny and that makes it more fun !! AND I still get 50 MPG with the A/C running! Why they stopped making them is beyond me! I love this car --- and it still has the original battery, going strong.

I love this car!! I have wanted one since they came back with it. It is very reliable for me and never have a problem with it. Everything works and my kids fight over who sits in thr front seat!

I have had a few problems with the VW, but most were covered by VW. They replace the window clip, the trunk latch and I replaced the timing belt, brakes, and regular scheduled maintenance. I cant complain. In 5 years and 80K I have spent maybe 2K. That is in line with the cost of car repairs today.

  • Fun and economical - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

We bought our 2001 Beetle GLS 1.8L Turbo Hatchback a year ago and have had no problems with it, whatsoever. Its not as comfortable as a Cadillac but its still comfortable, even on long trips. Its excellent on fuel, fast, and fun to drive (a modern and improved version of the classic Beetle). We enjoy waving to other Beetle owners on the road (sort of a cult thing). We also have two large artificial daisies in the vase on the dashboard which complement the car. Overall, we highly recommend this car for those who want something different, economical, and fun to drive.

  • Fun Yet Pragmatic - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Handles extremely well. Its not a sports car, but youre never lacking for power. Great gas mileage makes this a terrific commuter car for me. Even though its a diesel, it isnt noisy. It has extra headroom (important for tall guys like me). Extras, such as the alloy wheels, carbon trim, side airbags, rear disk brakes, electic windows/locks are all standard features. Hey, it really is fun to drive!

  • So far, so good - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

Overall, this has been a good vehicle. Strengths would be interior room for drivers and front seat passengers (I am 62" tall), adjustable steering wheel, shift smooth and quick, vehicle provides a good feel of the road. Stereo is powerful, CD changer was a nice little plus. Added the bra to the front to protect the white paint from stone chips, a must on this blunt-nosed little buggy. Colors of the dash are driver friendly at night, with purple and red gauges that are easy on the eyes. Remote controls for entry are a nice plus too. Sunroof feels almost like a convertible! Wide tires give good road feel, but a little road noise sneaks through.

The only problem with this vehicle is the front spoiler is low to the ground and gets damaged.

  • For the Love of Torque - 2001 Volkswagen New Beetle

This has been a terrific car, very durable and reliable and looking good doing it. My kids dont ever complain about being cramped although I think they probably are. Its cozy and all their friends love it. With the sunroof and windows open, its like a convertible, too, fun and loud, and like a party ready to go. Even though the car is now 6 + years old, it still attracts attention, and not just from kids, although kids really love it. It gets 45 mpg in mixed use, typically. Ive never had problems here in Detroit with the cold weather and diesel. The diesel is quiet and pleasant sounding in normal use, and has a higher pitch singing sound when you hammer it to kick in the turbo.
