This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, the New Beetle is no longer available in GLX trim. There's an improved TDI engine and restyled 16- and 17-inch wheels. Turbo S models get uniquely styled 17-inch wheels as a late-year addition. New safety features include head curtain airbags and upgraded head restraints. The Monsoon audio system is now standard on the GLS and new GDL headlights are optional. Later in the model year a fixed rear spoiler will replace the power-operated unit and a CD player with MP3 capability will be added. Convertibles get new exterior colors and color combinations. All Beetles get a new fuel cap warning light this year. TDI models can be equipped with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG), which is a six-speed manual transmission with electronic control of the clutch and gearshifting. It can be operated in full automatic mode, like a traditional automatic, or shifted manually like a Tiptronic.

Pros:
  • Cute yet classic styling, range of engine choices, long list of standard features, good crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Tight rear-seat accommodations, limited cargo room, high price of Turbo S model.

  • First car! - 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle

Since having this car, I have had it for two years now, I have really liked it. It was my first car. It took me a while to find the car that I did and Im glad I found it because it is in good condition. If you find one that works well and drives good then I think its a great car but if you find one that has a lot of problems and doesnt seem to fit the price then I recommend staying away from it.

Ive only had the car a month. It is a fun car to drive, and gets noticed. I ordered the Sundown Orange and it reminds me of a little hot rod. I had read reviews that the car was underpowered, but I have had no problems with pick-up or top end speed. All of the controls are well marked and easily operated. The GLS comes standard with alloy wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, cloth interior and cassette deck. I added heated seats and a 6 disc player in the console and still paid under list. Ive owned a lot of cars, both foreign and domestic and barring a major catastrophy, this is the best car Ive ever owned.

I have had nothing but problems with this car. Front bumper falls off, inside door panel falls off, pully for window snapped, replaced motor, the power steering pump gone twice, and now I am stuck with this huge piece of crap and no dealership will even take it as a trade :( *** Forget needing a simple part either because they will rape you in price! Fred Flinstone Car!!

  • TDI Beetle - best kept secret out there - 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle

Having learned to drive on a 1962 bug, I have a certain affection for the Beetle. This new one does not disappoint and is uber fun to drive. Owing a new Suburban and also a HD bike, I use the Beetle for daily chores and business commuting. At 61" and 250lbs, I have plenty of room. I specifically wanted a turbo diesel, manual because a small car should be fun and involve the driver in the experience. Cant complain abut the 44mpg I am getting as well! I also have a grin on my face knowing that it does not meet current EPA requirements!!! Global warm this.

My 3 year old daughter was a huge "Wiggles" fan in 03-04. If you arent aware, the Wiggles car is a red VW Beetle Convertible. Being a stay at home Mom, we always laughed and said what fun it would be to have a "Wiggles Car!" The more I saw the new Beetle Convertibles on the road, the more I had to have one! We live in NC, and spend a lot of time on the streets around our home riding with the top down. My little girl loves the wind blowing through her hair as much as I do! The car is so fun and such a conversation piece! Many people comment that they love my bug, & I have people pull up at stop lights & tell us they "love the bug." It makes me feel so young & full of life. After 19 months, I still LOVE it! Its a KEEPER!

WORST car to own! I have had it for 3 months and it has given me more problems than any other car i have ever owned! It is not worth your time and MONEY! omg. So many electrical problems and the inside is just falling apart! Dont let the cuteness fool you! Lesson learned here!!!!

  • New Beetle Convertible - A real Toy - 2004 Volkswagen New Beetle

Fun to drive, a real eye catcher. The new VW convertible has been lots of fun. It has had a couple of bugs, boot cover is hard to secure and electric windows sometime dont close together. The dealership has been wonderful about servicing and any problems. Time will tell the tale. If it holds up as the earlier model VWs this should be a life time of fun and great riding.
