Very reliable car. Performance is fair, but gas mileage is only mediocre.

I love the way the Volkswagen Beetle handles. The seats are infinitely adjustable and the steering wheel tilts and telescopes. Everyone can find a comfortable position. Add to all that, the 45 mpg around town that it gets and there should be no more to say. However, VW electronics are trash. Everything links into one central processing unit so if there is a problem with a door lock, the car may decide not to go! I typically spend $500 on non-routine maintainence items a year. Routine maintainence adds another $400 - 600. I am starting to do more of my own service as an effort to save money and keep my Bug rolling down the highway.

  • Dont buy me because I suck - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

From this experience I will never buy another Volkswagen again, and thats sad because I own 3 older ones. Starting from the broken CD on through the broken sunroof, just about anything mechanical that can fall apart did. We have had our Beetle into the dealer 5 times for various issues which included a recalled oxygen sensor to sputtering performance. And ironically, everytime we took it in our moron mechanics failed to report it. I will never buy a car from Continental of Joplin again, and Volkswagen has lost my familys business forever for shoddy workmanship and terrible dealer service. I rate this car the worst ever purchased.

In two years and 15000 miles the following problems: 1. gas cap remote did not work at time of delivery; 2.drivers side door grip flaked off; 3. drivers side window control died; 4. mass air sensor went out.

This is one of the funnest little cars to drive. It has good pep and excellent mileage. It will do about any speed but watch out for blue lights. The car is well made and has had very few problems. Fit and finish are pretty good.

  • The little TDI that could - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

I have been pleased to drive my bug for over 10 years. I have never had to open the engine. I do all maintenance including timing belt and oil changes. Replaced the clutch at 249,000 and have only had to do a little work on the A/C over the years. The TDI will outlast the vehicle itself as it is a workhorse that never gives up. In my type A days I got 38 to 41 MPG and over the last 100K I am averaging 43 to 46 but coasting in gear to stoplights and shifting at 2 to 2500. Will have to replace the old girl one day, but she feels like a old comfortable pair of tennis shoes that you just cant throw away. This is the best car that I have ever owned!

  • Just dont... - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

I have had nothing but one problem after another since I bought this car and it only had 12,000K miles on it! Now after I have spent $2,000 plus a $1,500 warranty, I am going to take a huge loss on the trade too. This car stinks and now everyone knows it. Just save yourself the trouble.

Warning!!! Do not buy this car. In the first 37000 miles I have had the starter replaced, the flashers, 3 oxygen sensors and both power windows have failed, leaving the windows all the way down. Both times I was hours from home. My relationship with VW is over forever!!!!!!!!!!!!
