I purchased a 1998 Beetle only to have BIG problems with it. By 50,000 miles I had replace 4 headlights, 6 driving lights a brake handle, 5 window switches, 5 inside door handles, 3 radios and a set of brakes and rotors. Then the trouble really started. Two radiator fans, engine fuse box, air conditioner conpresser, computer and more. So, I figured it was just the first year of production, surely they worked out the bugs! NOPE! I got a 2000 Beetle and still had the minor problems plus a new clutch at 30,000 miles.

I was excited when my wife and I bought her brand new VW New Beetle turbodiesel. Ive never had a worse car in terms of mechanical failures. It had problems with the power windows, A/C, etc. I was unhappy every time it broke, including needing a new manual transmission with only 30,000 miles on it. Some of the cost was covered by warranty. I sold the car recently on eBay. Now Im happy.

I bought this car two years ago and have had nothing but problems. my wipers have broken twice, my driver door lock has fallen out, my battery has needed to be replaced, my instrument cluster has been replaced ($500), my emc has been replaced, my rear brake pads and rotors have been replaced.....this car has spent so much time at the garage. do not buy this car.

The diesel engine purrs, gets great mileage and will probably last forever. Great seats, handles well. Now for the negatives (at 40,000k): Sticky rear hatch, replaced, still sticks. Plastic window clips broke, dealer replaced with metal clips, supposedly warrantied 10 years. Buzzes and rattles that come and go. CEL light, replace glowplugs and relay, $500.00 Rear pads and rotors, plus one of the calipers froze and needed to be replaced, $800.00 Front door sags when opened - a bolt BROKE OFF on the inside of the door for no reason, $300.00 sunroof shade broken... Gas latch opening by itself... Blah, blah....

Where to begin? Ah yes, my Beetle has miserable failing sensor lights-replaced too many times to count. The radio volume button is obsolete, turn it up, it goes right back down. It also has collapsing windows. The a/c blows the stench of the dead. It has broken knobs, buttons, switches, handles, and peeling rubber coating. Things that have had to be replaced include the turbo, electronic immobilizer, headlights once a month, clutch, brakes, brake lines, thermostat, and water pump (which caused a blown head gasket and a cracked head b/c by the time your thermo sensor goes off, already too late). Volkswagen dealership service stinks. They charged me for 5 hours of labor for just trying to figure out what was wrong, then said that they were "pretty sure" the turbo was out, then charged me to fix that too.

  • Cute but shoddy quality - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Bought the car new. Its cute and fun to drive, but weve had way too many problems with it. It burns at least a quart of oil every 2000 miles. The gas tank door release has been replace three times (we allways keep a screwdriver handy to pry it open when it breaks. The interior finish is pealing. The center console broke and weve had a number of other interior problems. Ill never buy another VW.

  • Dont do it............ - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Looking to buy a VW Beetle? Dont do it! We have had our Beetle for 1 1/2 years. We bought used with 60,000 on it. Shame on me for not doing my homework. It has been a nightmare. OK, it is fun to drive, gets 43+ mpg and we have put 50,000 miles on it. But the frequent costly repairs out weighs the savings at the pump and the fun of driving it. VW has an electrical issue. I get the thing fixed, and try to sell, but another indicator lights pops on: check engine, ABS, brake pads - you name it, it has been broken. At this rate I will never get rid of it.

  • WATCH OUT! - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

My car had a fair amount of miles on it when I purchased it so I assumed that maintenance would be a bit more expensive. Little did I know that everything on the car self-destructs at 50,000 miles. The interior is made entirely of plastic that breaks without notice (window switches, glove compartment, and arm rest compartment). Even the plastic brake light switches affiliated with the transmission release break (Ive replaced FOUR in one year!)! Watch out for this car! Its been in the shop about once per month in the 14 months that Ive owned it.

  • Trade it in quickly - 2000 Volkswagen New Beetle

Very cute car and fun to drive, but extremely unreliable. If you dont live close to a volkswagen dealership dont even think of buying one. Been on tow truck almost as much as driven in the 15 months we owned it. Constant problems starting. Shudders when it starts and was told by dearlership this was normal. When it shuddered for them, they could not figure out what was wrong and wanted to replace many parts to try to fix it. Car was bought for 19 year old daughter. She loved it when it ran, but it was dead more than running. Just replaced shifter linkage because linkage is made out of plastic parts.
