I bought this car a year ago with 100,000 miles on it expecting that with mileage like that, it may need some maintenance and repairs. I have driven it about 17000 miles and all I have had to do is change the oil and give her a tune up. It really hasnt given me any major trouble and it is so much fun to drive. My advice would be to shop carefully and find one that appears to have been well taken care of. I looked at at least 10 of these before I chose this one. It seems to be one of those cars that young drivers beat the heck out of and cant or dont take care of them properly so there are a lot of used/abused cabbies out there. But when you find a good one, grab it. You wont regret it

Lots of leg room for 61" and 65" drivers. No room in back, though. Cup holders are awkward. Expensive to repair and scheduling service is a pain. Non VW stations cant service it because the malfunction codes are standardized (I believe there is a pending lawsuit about this.) Service Engine light goes on if you dont click the gas cap. Get the manual shift if you want any power.

This car is the best. When I test drove it, I knew it was going to be the one. Its a small compact car perfect for zooming in and out of traffic and getting where you need to go.

  • best car ever - 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio

I have had many cars, but my 2000 VW Cabrio is by far the best. I bought it new, in 2000, and it has over 120,000 miles on it. It still has a lot of get up and go. We have made sure it gets the suggested preventative maintenance when due. I hope to keep it forever.

  • Dont do it - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio

Got this car because its what I had wanted for some time; what a joke. With my foot flooring the gas pedal, it took a few seconds to pick up speed. I was getting in the way of the other drivers. Granted I hadnt test driven the car before buying it, so I do blame myself for getting saddled with a cheaply built, sluggish, low performance vehicle. It freely swayed from side-to-side with the wind and rattled over every bump in its path. I hated it after 2 days, within two months it was history. Now Im riding in a Benz and have that "new car feeling." An important factor missing when driving the Cabrio.

  • Cute but terrible - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

I got my 2001 VW Cabrio as a high school graduation gift two years ago. My dad was so proud that he could get it for me, but now we are very very upset! Its been one thing after another with this car! It may be cute, but the upkeep and all the money going into it is an awful lot of hassle. First both front window dont roll down or up. My AC doesnt work. Timing belt wore before it should have. My seat is broken, my shifter shaft is completely worn. I took it to the dealer two days ago and the price to fix the AC and the shifter shaft was 1900. Youd think because it was German designed you get what you paid for, no. You dont. Dont get this car. it is cute but you are naive if you do.

Not the car I wanted, but I was going to get a convertible or use a bicycle! Didnt even look at it until I realized I couldnt afford any of my first 10 choices and thought I might have to get a Miata! Then I found out they had a model with automatic top. Some small design annoyances and it isnt a sportscar, but I knew that when I bought it. It is inexpensive to own, has lots of safety features and the top comes down so I am not complaining.

Great fun car. The only reason I have considered selling it is I am disabled and need money to pay for hospital bills otherwise it would stay a member of the family. Just last week I was offered a 1998 red corvette in pristine condition. The reason gas and I had to say no.

VW sells a vehicle equal in quality to much more expensive vehicles. I traded a 2001 Mercedes C240 for the Cabrio and like it much better. It doesnt have all the extra features but the acceleration is better and its alot more fun.

  • Ugh. - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

I am so frustrated w/his vehicle. I purchased this car used in 2006. It has been nothing but problems since day 1. I dont spend less then $1k every time it goes in the shop. Everything that could break, bust, freeze, etc. has. Ive lost numerous hubcaps (strange I realize), one day while driving the interior light switch just fell off, another day the glove box handle popped off & landed in the floor board. The interior fabric is like velcro, it literally takes me an hour to vacuum. Of course everyone thinks its cute...I remember when I thought that too, now Id love to drive it into a concrete wall.
