  • Hopefully Youll Think Twice About Getting One - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio
    By -

After being rear-ended Feb 2006 in my 99 Cabrio, I decided that I wanted a "new" car. Unable to let go of the convertible but unwilling to pay big bucks, I purchased an on-the-lot dealership-certified 02 Cabrio. This was a big mistake. I have had more problems in the last six months than in all the years I had the 99 model. I only have one vehicle, it has been in the shop numerous times, it can take days for repairs, and some of the "repairs" were not covered under the warranty I purchased. I have spent more, complained more, and been more frustrated with this car than with any other. I have reached the point where I am willing to spend the money to get a reliable vehicle...no matter who makes it.

  • I love my car - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

I have had this car for 9 years and counting. Finding parking is easy due to its size and maneuverability. The only time I ever had any trouble with it was when I took it to a non-VW specialist for a simple oil change. They told me that I need to fix all sorts of things and 2 weeks later my car started leaking oil. I took it back to my VW specialist. It took him a few times to figure our what was wrong but he did not charge me additional when I had to take it back. He fixed it and I havent had any problems since. Bottom line: if you dont take it to the dealer, take it to someone that specializes in VWs. If I need to get a new car, I will get a VW just so I can keep my mechanic.

  • Problems with my Cabrio GLX - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

I have had my car for a year and a half and it has had already the water pump go and now there appears to be problems with the engine. The warranties on VW are awful and personnally I dont think i would by another one.

Overall, the car is great, however, Ive only had it for about a year and a half and have already had to put it in the shop a few times for minor problems (the radio volume did not go to soft.) If youre looking for a cute convertible thats good in the winter as well as the summer, the cabrios a good choice

  • Dont buy this car - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

Ive had to replace the exhaust system, the ignition coil, the transmission, broken glove box, the mass air flow sensor is giving me issues now, and this summer the throttle sensor needed replacement. I think the air-flow and throttle are related problems. Basically my engine light never goes off. I had to replace the transmission-5 speed at 59,000 and VW would not honor the powertrain warranty of 100,000 said it was a wear and tear item. I know there is more that Im leaving out. The car needs a journal just to keep track of repairs. My mechanics feel sorry for me. I have been stranded or broken down about 8 times with this car. Its a shame because it was my 1st new car. Bad experience..

  • Love that Vdub! - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

I love this car because the seats, pedals, dash are all the perfect size and adjustability in relation to each other in my opinion. There are many cars that dont adjust to comfortably accomadate shorter people. The headrests are actually usable. The dash and hood are in the perfect spots to maximize visibility. So is the gear shift. I have a bad back, but I could drive this car for hours. I also love how it looks! Its very reliable and runs quietly. Love it!

  • Cute car...Lots of problems! - 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio
    By -

Ive had my cabbie for four years and it was great until the car hit 30,000 miles! The car began dying on me after sitting at traffic lights. When brought to the dealer they said there was nothing wrong with it. Right....until I got hit after the car died in the middle of an intersection! The check engine light constantly comes on and in the last 5 months I have spent close to $3,000 dollars fixing engine problems. The car has been babied since it was bought and theres no reason for all of these problems. Well except the car is a piece of JUNK!

  • Nice car but not backed by VW - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio
    By -

My wifes Cabrio, bought new in Jan. 2000 has been basically a good car. It is reasonably peppy and fun to drive. Recently, the automatic transmission began holding upshifts into overdrive. The dealer said the computer lost its baseline settings and although the car only had 19746 miles, VW would not cover it under warranty. Even though the 24 month warranty was past, the mileage was way under 24K. I contend that this should not be happening and if VW wont back it now, I have little hope of them doing the right thing later on. This combined with constant oxygen sensor problems on a 99 Jetta has made me loose faith in VW.

  • Problematic - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio
    By -

After falling in love with this convertible in the 80s, I dreamed of owning one. That dream has turned into a nightmare. Within the first 5 months, I had the Cabrio in and out of the dealership with a defective part that kept causing the car not to start. Then one morning in bumper-to-bumper traffic a wheel came off. This could have caused death or serious injury if I had been driving the speed limit. Now the transmission has just caused me to be stranded and returned to the dealership. These problems have all happened under 24K miles. The warranty runs out very soon, and I am debating on keeping this problem.

  • Wonderful when running - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

Good seats. Initial quality of VW is impressive but reliability has been disappointing. I recently sent VW a problem list 1)Engine revs high on start 2)Gas gauge only goes to 5/8 3) Door handle peels 4)Loud exhaust; 1 dlr suggested we replace all due to rust through 5) Window malfunctioned 6) Chk eng light comes on freq 7) Coolant light started to blink. Although just out of warranty (26K), VW fixed most except exhaust and handle. Other than reliability - fantastic car for the money.
