  • Dont Buy This Car - 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

Ill never buy a Volkswagen again. Door handles, glove box, knobs falling off/melting, even though handles have been replaced 3 times. Ditto for random indicator lights and windows that go up and down whenever. Worst though, are the tie rods. First replaced when car was 3ish. Four years later, were sitting in a hotel 4 hours from home waiting o/n for new TRs to be delivered tomorrow b/c car is un-drivable - at a total cost of $1K for hotel, rental car and repair. And well have to drive back in a week to pick up the car once its fixed. Car sits in garage 9 of 10 days and is used only for highway miles, so our driving not at fault. Our mechanics unanimously agree car is total crap.

  • I wouldnt buy it if I could do it over - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio

This is a really fun car, but the problems Ive experienced are definitely not worth its fun. Numerous problems with the electrical system-- dash lights come on for no reason, I have to restart the car to get the ac to come on, and it doesnt always like to start on the first try. It has terrible acceleration, and can be uncomfortable on long trips, but it is a fun beach car.

The Cabrio is a well designed contertible. Specifically, the GLS covers all the features that you need to get the most use out of your convertible (see below). There are some problems: The radio is dated - there is no in-dash CD player available - and Ive noticed an occasional buzz that doesnt appear to be speaker related. The lock system has given me troubles in the city. The key- fob is designed terribly, its easy to set off the alarm. You can feel the frame flex in a way that a car shouldnt. The car is great at its current price point. I sure wish VW had given it the redesign that should have happened years ago. Now it looks like the Bug will replace it as VWs Cabrio.

Currently, I have reported to NHSTA,BBB Autoline and the AZ Attorney Generals Office on the poor relaibility and defects of my 2001 (new) Cabrio G LX. This car has been in service over 37 days..fuel pumps, cruise control, ground defaults, wheel lugs, oil pan leak, rear brake problems. There has been continous major problems with this car...and other consumers in the service dept. waiting room, also have not experienced the dependalbility one is to expect when purchasing a new car.

Dont be folled by its cute appearance. There is a reason why VW no longer makes these. It is strange how all the problems started to occur on mine right after the 25,000 mile factory warranty was up. I have never had a car before that has needed a new exhaust system at 25,000 miles, not to mention new brakes immediately after that. In addition, be warned that you can only get engine coolant for this car at a VW or Audi dealer service departments, which can also lead to expensive repairs and a long wait to even get an appointment. For those of you who are winter drivers, the Cabrio for sure is not the car you want to deal with snow and slush in.

  • AWESOME vehicle for price and safety. - 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio

The car is amazing, and as long as you keep all maintanance up, like all of us should, it will run forever!!! This was my dream car from 11th grade and I finally had a chance to get it and BAM!! Many hours of cruising at the beach, to Kentucy and on to Phillidelphia and back home to NC. Gas mileage was great! I would reccommend this vehicle over and over, just be aware, regular maintanence is important no matter what vehicle you own. You go to the Dr when you need a checkup, take your car regularly too:-)

  • SOMETIMES I GO TOPLESS! - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio

I just absolutely love my car! I cant believe they even described it as sluggish. When I first purchased the vehicle, I was worried it wouldnt hold up to the speed my Acura Integra offered, but my little Cabrio definetley has some serious pep. Dropping the top (going topless) makes driving a whole new experience. This is my first convertible and let me tell you, once you go topless you never go back!

  • Its the Little Things - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio

I started having problems right off the bat. The check engine light came on about two months into my ownership. They had to replace the entire O2 sensor. Next the door locks broke. Theyve been replaced twice, and are currently broken again. The interior dome light broke in year three. I never touched the thing. The muffler started vibrating in year five. Ive had it "fixed" but its still vibrating when I accelerate. My car has been strictly dealership maintained. They are a pain to deal with. You have to pester and pester to get them to do anything. I figure if a part breaks and keeps breaking VW should change and make better more reliable parts.

  • I love my Cabrio! - 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio

The only problem I have had is that the top is splitting at the seam! All the way across the back and to my dismay I discovered that it is glued!! That is crazy! I have it taped right now but I am going to find out if someone can sew up the seam. So far everyone has said that it wont work, but Im going to try it anyway! I cant afford a new top(that is probably glued too!) That has been my only disappointment. Ive not had any big repairs. Its great in the snow! I can get in and out of everywhere and if I could get another one, Id upgrade to another one. Ive got about 160000 miles on it and I hope it lasts for another 3 to 5 years!

I used to own a 12 year old VW convertible. I loved that car so much that I bought a new one. It is fun to drive with the top down. Love it. Love it. Love it.
