This Year's Model Updates:

New for 2006, the hybrid version of the Highlander pairs a gasoline-powered V6 with electric motors to improve fuel economy and acceleration.

Pros:
  • Real-world gas mileage in the 20s, terrific acceleration, smooth ride, comfortable cabin with simple controls and solid materials.
Cons:
  • Extra weight results in so-so handling, engine can be noisy, poor access to third-row seat.

  • Coolest Car EVER!! - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
    By -

Im from Denver and weve had tons of snow this winter. I have wrung my car thru the ringer to give it a good "test" and it has done every thing Ive asked it to with ease and grace! In addition to the awesome AWD, the ride is smooth, the interior is comfy, and theres tons of horsepower. My low MPG was 22 (85 mph on I-70 in 100 degree heat) and my high was 29 (being a really good girl on the throttle). MPG drops substantially when its very cold out. Best MPG seems to be city highways with heavy traffic. I wouldnt trade this car for anything else on the road - unless of course it was something real expensive so I could sell it and buy 2 Highlander Hybrids.

I cant speak to reliability, as I have had the car less than a month. However, Ive tested in various conditions (not in snow yet), and I love it so far. The ride is comfortable, its incredibly smooth and quiet (luxurious feel), and the interior space and layout is very user friendly. It gets more than double the gas mileage of my last car (a Ford Explorer), yet is nearly the same size. The visibility is good, and I recommend the navigation system/ computer. The seats are the most comfortable Ive ever had in a car--and even the back seats adjust forward and backward. This car also has a third row seat, though I wouldnt use it regularly (its small.) VERY happy with it.

Drove it to New Mexico from Wisconsin last winter...it behaved perfectly...nothing has ever gone wrong with it...would like better mileage but its better than the 2004 Lexus RX330 I traded in...and essentially the same car...I will keep it till new technology comes out to replace it.

  • OWNING ONE MAKES YOU------ - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Makes you learn and understand how cool a hybrid is. You start driveing different to get better mileage (braking sooner and lighter to recover energy, etc). You start looking for articles about your hybrid. Wonder if a bigger after market battery is available to boost the mileage higher. After 3800 miles Ive gon from 24 mpg to an average of 27+mpg. I just can"t see not ever buying a non-hybrid again.

No complaints at all. Joy to drive, love the feel and smooth transition from elect to gas. One must listen to realize the gas motor is running.

  • Miles per gallon - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
    By -

The highlander hybrid I purchased has a mileage rating of 28 highway and 32 city. This would make me assume the mileage would not average less than 30 per gallon. I have been trying my hardest to "work" the battery for better mileage, although the best I can average with this vehicle in any condition is 27.5.

  • A very useful Ute - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Outstanding performance, will tow my boat. The Hybrid features make sense for me. I have dreamed of a system that preserves the investment I make in kinetic energy (mass times velocity squared) into potential energy to reuse. Perfect.

I just cant say enough about this vehicle. The ride is comfortable, the gas consumption is low for the size of the vehicle and the amenities abound in the Limited version.

  • Great SUV...that I still call a car - 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Have been researching this vehicle for over 1 year. I put my name on the waiting list to get the car in Aug. of 2004. It was worth the wait. This is a fantastic SUV. I drive it mainly in the city, I usually fill it back up with about 4 gal. left in the tank, and have been averaging about 360 miles on a tank. The tank is 17.2gal. I have a lot of stop and go traffic with some hi- way time as well. Have also been using the air-conditioner heavily as lately it has been in the mid- 90s here. I expect to get better gas mileage when the days start to cool. Will be putting it throught ultimate test when I drive it from Indpls,In. to Colrado Sprinds Co. I feel like I am 16 again!
