Overview & Reviews
Toyota has left the Echo untouched for 2002.
- Good gas mileage, speedy acceleration, roomy and functional interior, likely to be reliable.
- Cartoonish styling, annoying gauge placement, tilt-a-whirl handling, deceptively low base pricing.

This is KISS car - 2002 Toyota Echo
By ARY - February 8 - 9:33 pmThe less features the less failures, keep it simple. My manual Echo does 41 mpg and accelerates faster than almost any V6. I carry 8 scuba tanks and two huge gearboxes in it. I can park two Echos on one car spot. Now it is over 90K and i never experienced any problems. Front wheel drive is safe and lightweight body can be easily pulled from mud if you occasionally adventured into dirtroad driving. It is certainly the best buy for $13K i spent on it.

laugh if you want to . . . - 2002 Toyota Echo
By jekyl - October 3 - 11:00 amI bought this car because I was looking for the cheapest new car available. I had owned an 81 Tercel and I loved it. I figured the Echo took up where the Tercel left off. I loved the Echo immediately. 40 mpg, no trouble, fast, lots of fun to drive. Have a hard time not speeding with the get up and go manual transmission. If I can manage to get 3 kids carseats into the back seat (which will be difficult, but possible) Ill never get rid of it. I might get laughed at because of the way the car looks, but I laugh every time I pass a gas station full of gas guzzling SUVs in the urban jungle. Its too bad theyre not making Echos anymore. Its a great little car.

GREAT CAR!! - 2002 Toyota Echo
By JAN - June 11 - 10:00 amAFTER ONLY ONE DAY OF OWNERSHIP, I LOVE THIS CAR. IT HANDLES WITH GREAT EASE, EXCELLENT ON GAS AND MORE COMFORTABLE THAN MOST SMALL CARS. YOU SIT UP HIGHER WITHOUT THAT FEELING OF SITTING ON THE FLOOR.

it becomes your friend - 2002 Toyota Echo
By wrgraham - May 4 - 2:00 amAfter 2 years I like the Echo as much as when I started with it. It responds quickly to steering inputs. It accelerates smoothly and strongly. Great turning radius and good visibility makes it so easy to park. Fuel economy is excellent. I agree that the car is not physically attractive, but that fades as an issue when you live with the Echo.

Best car Ive ever had. - 2002 Toyota Echo
By bolvo - March 13 - 10:26 amI have had many cars in my life... from Mercedes Benz to Volvos to Nissan and Hondas. But boy did I ever own a Toyota? Not until now. Im 40 and I can tell you reliability and Toyota go together. This little car goes. 5 Speed Standard. 350 miles per tank!! Thats driving all over Houston for 10 days non-stop to the point where you forget what the car rolls on! And finally you remember to look at the fuel gauge... why? Because after 10 days of nothing but driving you are no longer concerned about gas or prices or even worrying about re-fueling. Cold A/C... small; easy to change the oil by yourself, brakes,etc... cheaper to fix... and its a Toyota. Yep, reliable (period).

fun to drive and fast mover - 2002 Toyota Echo
By thud - March 11 - 1:23 amThis echo is more fun to drive than my v6 2001 honda coupe. The pickup is amazing and it will leave bigger cars at the stop lights. The vtec engine has plenty of power. It handles well and rides like a jewel with no road noise. I am getting over 41 miles per gallon. It runs the 0 to 60 faster than the camry v6. Most standards rubber band at slow speeds in low or second gear.(surging). The echo is the only manual that does not rubber band.

A Home Run With Me - 2002 Toyota Echo
By Tom - February 11 - 7:50 amI bought this car new back in 2002 and quite frankly it was the first foreign car Ive ever purchased. I always bought from GM, and at the time of purchase, the "Big Three" were making only gas guzzlers (the Geo Metro was phased out). So I was very apprehensive about buying foreign. Wow, my fears were unfounded. This car runs and runs and runs. Ive got 80000 miles on it and the only thing Ive done is put gas in it and change the oil every 6 months religiously. Absolutely no problems, not even a sensor light has come on. Love this car - would recommend this car to anyone - and I have, and two people have purchased this car used and they love it as well.

2 door Toyota Echo 2001 - 2002 Toyota Echo
By femme - February 3 - 10:00 amGood qualities: The 2 door Toyota Echo 2001 is a fun car to drive - it zips around, up hills even with the AC on. It also has a fantastic 3 in 1 stereo system with 6 speakers. It stands a little higher off the ground, especially for a small car, which is very helpful in this era of SUVs. I am a large person, and the Echo fits me well, with plenty of head room and no need for a seatbelt extender. I also find the dashboard set up (with the MPH in the center of the dash) to be easier to read than peering through the steering wheel, and I love all the additional spaces built in to the dash.

Almost a Great car... - 2002 Toyota Echo
By GPRenegade - January 24 - 9:40 amI bought my echo after driving a V6 Buick LeSabre so my numbers for performance and comfort may be a little biased, but the rest of my ratings are bluntly honest and accurate. Performance & comfort: has good acceleration from a standstill, but not so great at higher speeds (engine vibrates, whines, and often hesitates). Fun & economy: the Echo handles like a go-kart. Great for turns and navigating traffic, not so great at high speed or in bad weather. Gas mileage is good, close to what is expected. Design & quality & reliability: great interior styling, love the speedometer placement. Hate the exterior styling. It reminds me of a ride at disneyland. As for reliability, its a Toyota.
