We bought this car after graduating from college -- it was the only new car we could afford, and it met my strict retentive guidelines (safety, gas mileage, low cost of ownership). This car has been fantastic. Its survived a move to Vermont (think mountains), which is pretty good for a little 1.5 liter engine. Perhaps the most impressive in the gas mileage -- 40mpg highway. You can barely get that in a hybird car. The car is also well laid-out, with plenty of headroom for our 6 tall friend. I do my own synthetic oil changes, and that engine runs like the day it came off the lot. The CD player recently died, and the air intake had to be replaced. Other than that, smooth sailing!

Ive had this car for 4 years, just hit 72,000 miles, and love it. Ive used it for everything from in-town commuting (tight turning radius and tiny spots it can fit into are key) to driving from Boston to San Fransisco nonstop (the front passenger seat makes a suprisingly comfy bed). Obviously, the 42-44mpg (highway) is great. It has more than adequate acceleration, and managed the mountains on I-80 just fine at 75-80mph (although some downshifting was needed). The best part for me is that since I do routine maintaince myself, and it hasnt needed any repairs AT ALL except for replacing a burned-out taillight bulb, its been dirt cheap to operate.

  • I LOVE this car - 2000 Toyota Echo

It gets good mileage, average of 36 mpg, and it handles well for a small car. Its comfortable, though I find my shoulder hurting after sitting in it too long since Im 61 and the armrest on the door isnt quite high enough to sit without slouching. The only problems so far are a catalytic converter and a charcoal canister. The Catalytic Converter was replaced at 79,000 and now needs it again at 90,000, thats a major expense only 11,000 miles apart. I do love this car, so hopefully once its catalytic converter is fixed it will be back to its excellent driving condition. The Toyota dealership was happy to see it and told me they are the best of the used Toyotas out there.

One day my dad got a call from a dealership saying my desired 4door sedan in seafoam blue Echo came off the truck and on the lot!! We were there in a heartbeat and bought the car without me test driving it! I just somehow knew that I would love this funny weird little car at first sight! 11 years later, I still have it and love as much as I did the day I drove it home with my dad from the lot. I showed it off to everyone I met and people laughed at me saying I have an ugly car. Well I laughed at everyone when the gas crunch came and still laughing now as gas is over $4!! Who needs a silly high maintenance ego boosting Prius when I get 40mpg city and 50mpg on the highway going 100? MUAHAHAHA

I have owned my Echo for 7 yrs and it is the best car I have owned. I have had this car where trucks have been stuck and it still keeps going in the snow. Seven years and 195000 kms later with proper maintenance all I have had to do is doughnut gasket struts and brakes once.

I bought my little green Echo in August of the first year it was out, so I was a little worried as it hadnt been out for very long. However, knowing Toyota, my fears were few, and I felt (and still feel) this is a better value than almost any other compact out there. Roomy, great gas mileage, responsive, good pick up- I can hold my own in this car. Its true it can get blown about by a stong wind or a large semi passing, but I have few complaints besides that!

  • Echo ROCKS - 2000 Toyota Echo

I have owned over 40 cars, and this Echo is one of the absolute best when ALL factors are considered. I used to drive 25,000 a year and have had big luxury cars that were great, but this little sucker is what a car should be. Fun, cheeky, economical, and reliable -its a Toyota. I have the hatchback and love the look of it, too. All around its a blast. The seats could be improved but thats it really. ECHO FOREVER

I love this car! I got it the first year it was out. I had original tires on it until I replaced them a few weeks ago. So, that was 5 years and the only reason that I did it was that Michelin had a sale.

  • Saved me - 2000 Toyota Echo

Bought it new and drove it about 43 miles per day commuting to work. Roomy,Great MPG,Handling is good also. At just short of 30,000 miles I ran into the back of a Dodge Ram Truck that stopped suddenly in traffic. The Car was totalled. Air bag deployed and saved my life. The steering wheel could be softer. I walk out of it with bad bruising from the seatbelt,Suggest 5 or 4 point harness,10 staples in my knee, broken ribs, busted wrist, one fractured foot bone. Very well built. Going for a bigger SUV this time. Thanks for the safety built in even in the low priced units.
