Overview & Reviews
This all-new coupe is based on the Camry platform. Designed jointly by the Toyota Motor Corporation in Japan and the Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Solara is targeted at consumers who want the style of a sports car but the room and comfort of a larger, more practical vehicle.
- The Accord Coupe is slightly quicker and has a one-year head start in market share.

Nothing can touch it for the money - 1999 Toyota Camry Solara
By Superlara - October 9 - 9:36 pmI purchased my Solara about five years ago when it had 74,000 miles on it. The timing belt/water pump had just been replaced. Since then I have put an additional 70,000 mile on it and have only changed the oil and filter, the front struts and strut bearings, and one set of tires. Brakes have over 70K on them and are still not totally worn out. This cars continues to amaze me with the build quality. I have owned 6 Hondas and 4 other Toyotas and this car is the best by far. Since it is coming up on ten years old, I want to replace it, but cannot justify that when the car runs as well as it does. Averages about 20mpg in the city and 25-27 on the highway.

Reliable, fun, and hassle free - 1999 Toyota Camry Solara
By Andy - December 9 - 6:10 amI bought my 1999 Solara in April of 2003 and havent had any major problems with it. Ive seen a lot of different reviews on here and some are accurate whereas others I cant understand. The interior is pretty straight forward, dont expect some crazy/flashy foreign interior. The ride is very smooth and it has decent power, but nothing huge compared to other coupes. I have had issues with the struts, but Im from Michigan. We have the worst roads in the entire country! Fuel economy is average, not as good as I expected from a Toyota, but overall Ive been VERY happy with my purchase. I have yet to fix a single thing on the car and Im approaching 76,000 miles on it.

Nice but not reliable - 1999 Toyota Camry Solara
By AlK - July 30 - 10:00 amRoom & comfort front & back great. Great acceleration if air off. Too many mechanical problems. Defective valve spring - took dealer 3 days to ID & fix engine when car was less than a month old. Front struts replaced @22,000 miles. Front brakes and rotors replaced & 22,000 and 35,000 for rust problems ($360). Anti-lock brakes extend stopping distance on rough surfaces and sometimes kick in for no reason.Car will be paid off soon & will be history before the brakes go again.

Solara- Excellent Long Ranger - 1999 Toyota Camry Solara
By Gene - May 9 - 8:50 amI keep cars a long time. My 97 Solara should break my record for longevity. Brought it new and it now has 171200 miles on it. It is also a 5-speed (special ordered) V6, and the clutch is still original and still tight. Mileage is about 33mpg if I can keep my speed below 65mph. Reality has been excellent and I only had a suspension problem, which took Toyota several attempts, but was finally fixed. If you can get one used, it is an excellent choice.

Just Rolled 200,000 on the Clock - 1999 Toyota Camry Solara
By Road Coot - November 4 - 8:30 amBought my Solara new in 1999 and have had nothing but satisfaction with the vehicle. Regardless I expect to go WAY past 250,000 miles with this car. Just follow the maintenance schedule and take care of it, and itll be the most reliable vehicle youve ever owned. Would I buy another? In a New York Minute. But this time, I will find a better dealer.

Not So Pleased - 1999 Toyota Camry Solara
By Its Not All That - January 21 - 2:00 am-Replace EGR valve at 30k-- took it to the dealer 5 times to figure this one out!!!~ very annoying -Sruts in need of replacing at 40k-- I agree, this should be recalled -24 mpg, not so great -CD player skips, possibly as a result of the strut problem-- $1500 to replace- - 2 weeks to figure this one out -big heavy doors that ding and get dinged -$600 to replace window due to vandalism-- not cheap! -Severe windshield glare
