This Year's Model Updates:

Top-level SLE models can be equipped with a new JBL audio system, so long as you order leather upholstery. Option package fiddling makes it easier to equip a Solara the way you like. The anti-theft and engine immobilizer system is restricted to SLEs, while SEs now come standard with a six-speaker cassette stereo. Twilight Blue Pearl is replaced by Indigo Ink as an exterior color.

Pros:
  • Roomy cabin, convertible version, reliable Camry genes, delectable V6.

  • I love this car - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

I looked for a year for a used Solara convertible and Im glad I waited. I have the 6-cyl and it drives like a sportscar. I have only done regular maintenance (did the 90K mi service), as it has needed nothing else. I plan to drive this car until it falls to pieces, which could be 10 more years. Comfort is great for the driver and passenger, the back seat passengers have complained a bit. And, of course, its a bit noisy on the highway with the top up, just not completely airtight but who cares?

My Solara conv. has been the perfect crisis vehicle for a family guy that wants to cruise, enjoy the fresh air, and still have the ability to take company along. The design draws compliments, the performance is adequate, and the comfort is outstanding. It could use a little more structural support and better suspension components, but other than that no real complaints. The top has proven VERY reliable and sound for a seven year old cloth top, and I have only treated it(water proofing)and had it retightened twice for minimal cost. So far reliability has been outstanding and I just turned 90,000.

  • Good car, yet not a fun one - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

I recently bought a Solara and was suprised at how nice the interior is! nice leather, nice sound, and the wood paneling adds a nice touch. Yet this car is no performer. The V6 is underpowerd and it is not fun to drive. This car should be labeled as a cheaper luxury car, which it is, but is not a sports car by any means. It is 1000% better than a camry, and is a very reliable car. Although I plan to get a Injen cold air intake, Greddy Exhaust and a TRD supercharger to make up for the not-so-fun factor about it.

  • Great Car - Terrible Dealer - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara
    By -

Car was delivered with 15" steel wheels when 16" alloy are supposed to be standard. I guess the dealer swapped them with another car. Clutch has chattered since the day I picked it up, steering pulls to the left and there is a slight gear clash when shifting into 3rd. Its been back to the dealer several times but they dont see a problem. Stay away from Mt. Kisco, NY Toyota!

  • Great in Summer, Terrible in Winter - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

I love the car in the summer, but it is awful in the snow. The tires spin, the car gets stuck and fishtails out of control at times, even in light snow conditions. Its definitely not made for the new england region.

  • Great convertible - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

I have owned my Solara convertible for 1 year. It is a beautiful convertible with all the Toyota quality and reliability. Excellent on the highway at 70+ mph, very quiet. People stop to tell me what a pretty car it is. Large trunk, spacious rear seat. It is an unexciting car to drive. The rear window visibility is below average.

  • Good Sporty car - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

I purchase this V6 5speed car about 6 months ago and have been very happy with it. It is a roomy 2 door coupe with similiar room to the camry. The engine is reasonably powerful and the interior rid is quiet. I have the JBL radio. It does pretty good but some songs seem to be unbalanced. The suspension is not sporty. It is very soft and there is much body roll. The clutch has a very smooth feel and the gears shift quickly. Gas mileage is 25 city and 31 hwy I added the TRD struts, springs and swaybar to improve the handling of the car. This makes the Solara handle like a much smaller car. If you like the small car feel, this is the way to go.

  • Love it! - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

Very comfortable car. My husband has long legs and when sitting behind him in the back seat there is plenty of room. The trunk is huge. I have had actually a couple accidents in this car (not my fault), it held up very well. One of the most favorite cars Ive had.

I bought my Solara over 3 years ago at 50K. Now its at 99.6K and has never left me stranded. Replaced timing belt, brakes, window fell off track once and valve cover gaskets and struts most recently. The car does have a smoking issue still, and has oil changes no more than every 3K (castrol syntec). Just now needing a transmission checkup and probably a flush. The ac compressor makes noise but hasnt died yet. Overall its great, minor maintenance compared to vehicles.

  • Solid Car - 2001 Toyota Camry Solara

I bought my 01 18 months ago with 58,000 miles on it. Since then I have put 30,000 miles on it. I have had no trouble with the vehicle at all. However, when I first bought it I had to put one quart of oil in whenever it reached 2K miles since an oil change. I began changing the oil every 2K miles and now it doesnt use any oil even if I go past 3K between oil changes (sludge can be a problem with this model engine and frequent oil changes are a good idea). The 4cyl is a little underpowered but it gets good mileage. The interior fit is sound throughout the car. The hood finish is rough and seems to be a common problem with solaras in these years.
