  • Toyota/ Scion xA- Engine Problems - 2005 Scion xA
    By -

I bought a used 2005 Scion XA in April 2010 with 118k miles. Based on my research & previous experience with Toyota; I thought I was getting a reliable and fuel economic commuter car. Unfortunately within 5 months and 7k miles later my check engine light came on. My mechanic told me heard a knock in the engine. 2 weeks later the car started to shake and the got very loud. I will never buy a scion again & lost faith in toyotas reliability.

  • Its a Buggy - 2005 Scion xA

Rides like a buggy, run over a toothpick and youll feel it. Quick and nimble on dry pavement, terrible in snow. Bought with 32k miles and replaced AC at 38K for $600 and new battery at 40K but it has never left me stranded. Its a local driver thats not meant for the highway. Get about 25 MPG local and I beat the crap out of it and it just keeps going.

It feels like a go-kart, responsive but you feel all the bumps. Loud on the inside.

  • Not what we expected - 2005 Scion xA

We were in the market for a very fuel effecient vehicle. This is not the one! Expecting around 40mpg on the road, as promised by the delearship. Actual is about 25-8 mpg. This car was purchased to save fuel and we felt the "down sizing" of comfort would be worth the savings. For a sixty mile per day trip we now drive our 01 Nisson that still gets over 33mpg. Toyota and the dealership have said this is a "break in period", however, Ive never had a car that just didnt reach close to the mpg. The sacrafice in size isnt worth the car not performing. We bought 5speed in order to pull behind an RV. Thats when we get our best milage. When the car is being towed. I am NOT a Scion fan!

The gas mileage is good but not up to the rating. Acceleration is anorexic, but nothing more than expected for such a small engine - although the manual is better, anybody that tells you its good is delusional. Despite the performance issues, its a cute car with only minor issues largely due to some cheaper parts.

  • Not the best car - 2005 Scion xA

I have put 21,000 miles on this car in 6mos. The seats are horrible, it is extremely loud in the cabin, the ride is so stiff that you can feel the tar stripes through the rock hard seats... It would be a great car for anyone who drives in town, not on the freeway... Any speed over 45mph the car becomes very loud. I would not recommend this car to anyone who does interstate/long- distance driving... the gas mileage doesnt make up for the lack of comfort and quiteness of more fuel-ineffcient, more expensive vehicle.

  • Poor design bad quality - 2005 Scion xA
    By -

Pros: Small, sleek, roomy and fuel efficient. Cons: Bad design, poor quality, noise, vibration. -My speedometer broke, to be replaced. -Brakes (disks and pad) to be replaced. -Can not open widows if driving on highway speeds, because bad design makes this vehicle unstable, and it builds excessive pressure in the cabin. -Lots of vibration noises in the cabin wile idling. I bought it thinking of Toyota quality, but overall this vehicle has very poor quality.

  • Generally OK, some issues need attention - 2005 Scion xA

Wiper motor burned out in less than 1 day. Seat belt clip broke day 5. Multiple LOUD rattle developed. Not good mileage. Radio exptememly difficult to figure out and to operate when you do. Radio rates a 1 out of ten. I may replace it.

  • Bad egg - 2005 Scion xA

Two wheel bearings out, two bent wheels replaced, stabilizers replaced, brakes and calipers replaced, wheel fitting replaced, all fluids replaced, two batteries dead. Its cost me $1,700 to repair a car worth $4,800. Screw that. Its not worth it. Go with a Honda. Its only been 78,000 miles.
