This Year's Model Updates:

In an effort to get buyers under 30 into its dealerships, Toyota launches an all-new division called Scion. The brand will eventually grow to three models, but for now two are offered; one of these is a small but well-equipped five-door hatchback called the xA. Scion will use a no-haggle sales strategy and give buyers ample opportunity to customize their xAs, drawing upon a list of over three dozen dealer-installed options.

Pros:
Cons:
  • The cool stuff costs extra, modest passing power with automatic transmission, no cruise control.

  • Feels like a bigger car - 2004 Scion xA

Ive been driving the xA for two weeks now. Its a small car that feels like bigger car. The room inside, plus the height of the seats makes you feel like youre driving something bigger than most other cars on the road. Yet, you can squeeze into those small spots and save tons of money on gas. The performance has been good and consistent. The controls are good except for those of the stereo (which sounds great). Ive driven it both in the city and on the highway and the performance is very good. It responds very well. I got used to the speedometer location very quickly and honestly prefer it over it being behind the steering wheel.

  • Best of the Best - 2004 Scion xA

After doing on-line reviews of small cars with standard features I kept finding that the Scion xA was the best car overall. I ordered the car, without test driving it, and when it came in and drove it I found it was more than I ever expected. I have a 1999 5 speed Corvette (summer car) and wanted a reliable, fun to drive winter car and man Ive found it! Its practical, great to drive, great to look at and have already have recommended it to two friends who are definately going to purchase it. The fit and finish of the car is top notch and I was shocked at the power this small 4 cylinder has. For the price and standard features it cant be beaten.

Had a Toyota echo. Put over 200k miles on it with only changing the brakes and exhaust manifold gasket. Wanted a newer car. The xa has the same power train as the echo. So bought it.$11.9k . Same as the echo. Great mileage (I drive 90% highway. At least 38+mpg). Ive loaded it up with lumber (strapped qty 16 16 1x8s on the roof), cement, you name it, Ive loaded it. No probs. I consider ti a throw way car so Im not concerned about the roof or scratching it. Thats why I load it to the max when I do my home depot runs. Cant beat it. The only thing Ive done on it is new brakes/rotors in the front and exhaust gasket. (90k miles on it at that point)

  • Great value - 2004 Scion xA

It has been three and a half years since we got our xA and we have been very pleased. We have had no problems with the car; havent had anything fixed yet. We still get >30mpg, even with city driving. The car is great for the city: easy to zip around and park in tight spaces. It still looks great outside and inside, although the audio controls are not very good. It is a capable vehicle for the highway, but you will feel when tractor trailers pass you. While it looks small it has a lot of room inside and is very flexible. You wouldnt believe the amount of stuff you can fit in.

  • Havent put gas in it yet - 2004 Scion xA

Loved the no pressure sale. This is the way all car purchases should be. At only 100hp I expected lousy performance, but with such low weight, it zips! 60-80mph on the freeway with no problems. Seudo Recarro seats sit nice front and back. It took about 30minutes to get used to those center guages. Now my other cars seem weird.

We bought one after our Neon was totalled. Despite being smaller on the outside (and cheaper), it has more features (MP3 capability), is fun to drive, is quiet, is RELIABLE (the Neon is NOT), and can still hold 5 people without too much complaint. I think that it is the best buy in the small car market. And 38 mpg on the freeway (with the 5-speed) isnt bad either.

  • Im Sold - 2004 Scion xA

I was shopping for a commuter car and was considering a Civic or Corrola and then I spotted an Xa. This interesting little car grabbed my attention immediately with its "love it" or "hate it" styling and I love it. Who would of thought you could build a reliable car with a certain cool factor for under $13,000. Well, I drove all 3 which had comparable drives but there was something that I admired about the Scion. Maybe it was how it stood out in a crowd of bland economy cars. Or perhaps, it was the build quality of a Toyota coupled with the 5 year 60k powertrain warranty (which will probably never be used)for the price of a Kia. Im sold.

  • ONE MORE TIME TO THE SHOP - 2004 Scion xA

WITH IN A WEEK OF HAVING THE CAR, i HAD TO HAVE A NEW MOTOR MOUNT, WHICH DIDNT FIX THE PROBLEM. TOOK IT BACK AND THE TECH PEOPLE DECIDED IT NEED A LUBE JOB ON THE FRONT SPENDLE, WHICH MAY ONLY PROLONG A CONTINUING PROBLEM, NOW AFTER HAVING THAT DONE, THE ALINMENT IS OFF AND I WILL HAVE THE TAKE IT BACK A THIRD TIME.THE XA DOSENT SEEM AS REFINE AS A NORMAL TOYOTA, BUT FOR THE PRICE ITS STILL BETTER THEN MOST

  • I Liked It Until the Winter - 2004 Scion xA

I purchased this car because my Eclipse decided to break permanently. I wanted a car that was different and got good gas mileage. It fit the bill. Its surprisingly agile and has a great stereo. I truly loved the car until I drove home from work during a small snow storm. I almost ended up sliding over a cliff. This car is terrible in the snow and rain. It is the only car Ive ever felt uncomfortable driving in bad weather. Also, the trim in the interior is always making an annoying vibration sound. Im going to trade it in after I get a good down payment for a Subaru WRX.
