This Year's Model Updates:

Pontiac redesigns the Grand Prix for 1997, giving buyers slick new styling, a longer and wider wheelbase and supercharged V6 power on GTP models. Traction control, antilock brakes, dual airbags and side-impact protection are standard. Optional is a built-in child safety seat.

Pros:
  • Styling, performance, standard dual airbags, standard anti-lock brakes, standard traction control
Cons:
  • No traction control when GTP Package is ordered. Base engine could use more oomph.

  • Good but it has its moments - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

The car drives awesome, never a problem with engine ever. Now lets get to the other things though..I have had my drivers side motor replaced twice, it needs to be replaced. I cant get it replaced with the warrenty co because the motor is not totaly burnt out. So when i want to raise the window icant most of the time..hows this one try driving down the 90 in BUFFALO in the middle of WINTER and the window is stuck in the down position. fun!! I also had to have the wiper motor fix once. The spark plugs were messed up when i first got, the car would get up and go put it sputtered.

At 6 yrs and 83k miles, I have a few more problems to list. Now the power door lock actuator (front, passenger) works when it feels like it ($52/part). The clear portion of the other headlamp fell off ($72/part). Dealer tried to BS me about WI climate and it not being a frequent problem (Ive done the research). Still losing about a quart of oil/change, and now the high pressure hose coming into the power steering module is leaking. I rarely get above 20 MPG, now. I have reached a dilemma, do I buy a Honda, or use the $3k I have in GM Card earnings?!?!

so theres a lot of stuff that goes wrong with this car. coolant elbow under alternator goes bad, blower motor only works on 5, and some other little quirks. but thats not where i want to go with this review. This is a SOLID CAR. i beat the crap out of my car for 8 years. from 118k to 212k miles i drive it hard. always changed the oil. the only thing that happened is 3rd gear stopped working. and honestly im surprised it lasted as long as it did with all the burnouts and snow doughnuts i did.

  • Hold onto this one for a long time! - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

I drove this car for 220k miles, then handed it over to my 16-year old daughter. She is now 19, the car has 265k miles, and it drives great. Spent $1,900 to put a new transmission in it at 185k. Other than that its been relatively expected maintenance for more than ten years. What a great engine. You could probably shoot it with a shotgun and it would still run smoothly. After 250k, the interior began gradually deteriorate, but how can I complain. I went out and bought a 2003 Grand Prix to replace it, and have already put 190k miles on that one.

  • Great Choice - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

We bought this car in Amarillo, TX and from there we drove it to Dallas, Red River NM, and then to Seattle, WA. It never missed a beat. One of the most dependable cars weve ever had. The V6 runs great and is a lot of fun to drive. This car handles well for its size. It also has an enormous trunk which was a great benefit when moving from Texas. The doors are way too long, however, and can be impractical in small parking spots.

I never realize how good of a deal I got ($4900) until I saw a friend spend $33,500 on a loaded 2003 model. Other than mine lacking mood roof and dual heated seats (only the driver in mine). The style interior and everything else looks exactly the same. I love the drive and the great gas milage on the highway (in town is not that good however).

This is the car I had from sophomore year in high school through college and only now looking to replace. I bought it at about 115K miles and it now has 223K miles. It has the 3800 V6. I had to replace the intake like this engine always has to have done with it. Recently starting at about 210K Im getting the problem with the transmission as stated on the reliability on here and rust on the underside is starting to get bad. Things that went bad: cruise, AC, blower, pwr steering, sensors, wiper fluid pump, ABS, etc. Otherwise, it has stood up to all the abuse I put it through and kept going. Its a fun ride and has gone a long ways. But to much has gone wrong for me to want to buy another.

Bought this as my first new vehicle and ordered it before it was in the showrooms. Still drives like a dream without any problems. Sporty, reliable, and fun. I highly recommend this vehicle.

  • NO PROBLEMS SO FAR ALL HIGHWAY MILES - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix
    By -

I bought this car with 64,000 on it. As of 2/11/03 it now has 106,000 miles on it. I drive 70 miles a day just to work ALL highway with cruise set at 71mph. Still has factory trans fluid, coolant (dexcool), and spark plugs. My only problem was the alternator which went at 79000 miles - $100 bucks and 10 minutes and it was fixed!!! Brakes had to be re done - but they were factory originals at about 81000 miles. Still burns tires if need be (with trac control off of course)!! The key is following the manual for oil changes!
