This Year's Model Updates:

Pontiac redesigns the Grand Prix for 1997, giving buyers slick new styling, a longer and wider wheelbase and supercharged V6 power on GTP models. Traction control, antilock brakes, dual airbags and side-impact protection are standard. Optional is a built-in child safety seat.

Pros:
  • Styling, performance, standard dual airbags, standard anti-lock brakes, standard traction control
Cons:
  • No traction control when GTP Package is ordered. Base engine could use more oomph.

  • SUPERB CAR!!! - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

I purchased this 1997 Grand prix GT new in October 1997, the first year for the "Wide Track" model. This has been one fine automobile. The handling is superb. It is such a great road car. My daily commute consists of approximately 50 miles per day, all interstate. I really appreciate the "get-up-and-go" and responsiveness of this car. I would buy another one if I was ready to unload my 97. My kids tell me they want it if I decide to get rid of it.

Just purchased a 1997 GP 4Dr SE sedan. Next day we road tripped it from Fresno, CA to Las Vegas. This is the most comfortable car I have ever ridden in. It has a ton of room, handles beautifully on the open road even in heavy rain and gusty winds. There are some small cosmetic fixes that need to be done, but compared to the 1988 Toyota Corolla I drove before this is FANTASTIC!!!!! I love this car!!!

  • Starting to show age - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

My GP is great but its starting to show its age. Sterring wheel controls stopped working and i needed new rear struts a few months ago, power window switch went as well fortuantly it wasnt the motor. The engine is still running great. And this is car is very structually sound, a few years ago a large tree limb fell on the car, and the car was driveable no broken glass or lights, door trunk and hood could open and close. Gas milage wasnt that good until I upgraded to a K & N air filer gas miliage went from 18-19 around town to 21-22n and highway went from 23-24 to 28-29.

  • First year went well! - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

I bought this car just over a year ago, and I still absolutely love it. I havent had many problems... my shifter remains stuck in park, which is annoyingly solved with a key every time I start the car. Other than that, I couldnt be happier with it! After owning a 1987 Park Avenue, this is so much more fun, but its still practical for Wisconsin Winters. I guess Pontiac could have put a little more into the interior styling. Its a little cheap feeling, but not ridiculously so.

  • Good looking car, but not more than this - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

Not a reliable car. You never know what will break down next. Constatntly have to fix something, even though I do not drive it too much. Most of the problems happen when it is too cold or too hot. Interior plastic is cheap. Headlight glass on each side just falls down by itself (probably it is a bad glue that GM uses) Dealership sells the lamp and the glass as one piece and charges around $120. I know several people who had the same problem with this car, but GM does not have a recall on them.

This car has been great to me. I love the speed and the handeling of it. I wish it was a stick. I goes just about anywhere in a short time if you know what i mean. I love this car.

  • Excellent Car! - 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix

Super fast! Nothing short of a genuine sports car with a semi-skilled driver can consistantly keep pace once you drop the pedal. Cruises effortlessly at speeds over 80 mph, and even at that speed there is still plenty of power for passing. On a lightly traveled backroad, I ran it up to 120 mph and it was still pulling hard by the time I lost my nerve. Gets 18 mpg around town, but a respectable 30 mpg on the freeway. This engine likes premium fuel. Handling is very good, but suspension could be firmer. Interior trim is fairly low grade, fit-and- finish could use some work. Overall, an excellent ride.

Bought this car with 20k on it. Thnis is my third Pontiac. Have had some electrical problems with this car, typical Pontiac! Had the transmission replaced before warranty was up, only other thing replaced was alternator at 64k. Been very reliable car(s).
