Nothing but problems - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM
By minnesotagirl - January 20 - 10:00 amThis car looks so sporty-sure hope it will help it sell fast!!! Bought it one year ago for 3000.00, have put in over 1500.00 with another 1000.00 needed. AC compressor failed, water pump, power steering lines and hose, intake gasket, plenum gasket, valve cover gaskets and o-rings, alternator all needed replacing. Now has some suspension problems. Need I say more?

No Help - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM
By lissabean2 - July 22 - 2:00 amI loved my car, until the engine blew in it. I found out that this is typical in Pontiac Grand Ams. Too bad I found this out a little to late. GM would not help me replace the motor because (1) I was not the original owner (2) I was over the warranty (BY 400 MILES). If I could do it all over I would NOT buy this car. My experience with GM has been horrible, I have never experienced such rude customer service before. I will never buy another GM and I will try to convince others of the same.

96 Grand Am GT - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM
By Daniel - July 19 - 5:43 amThis is my first car, and its certainly fun to drive, but it has some issues. Window motors are absolutely terrible, had to replace the drivers side and will likely need to replace passengers soon. Several other minor issues, adding up to ~$600 in repair bills in a year.

5 Speed, 4 Cyl, 4 Dr GT - Water pump! - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM
By GMUser - August 11 - 2:00 amOK, overall I have enjoyed this car which I bought new, but the mechanical reliability is questionable. The worst design flaw is the water pump it is driven from the cam chain and requires a MAJOR stripdown of one side of the engine to replace. For a water pump!!! They cost over $500 to replace and last about 40000 miles - Pontiac this was not a smart idea.

Decent for 13 year old car - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM
By md - April 2 - 9:26 pmI bought this car for $600 last January. I took it to a mechanic before buying it so that I would know there were not any major issues and what to be prepared for in the future. The transmission, motor (although it does need a new motor mount)and other major components seem to be doing well. In the past year I have had to replace the tie rods, CV joints ($500) heater core (300) and serpentine belt. I do not feel that this is to much work to put into an other wise reliable car for the cheap price I paid. I now have 188,000 miles and expect it to continue going strong. I think people who have had back experiences with this or any car did not do their homework or mechanic check before buying
