  • Make Sure You Get A Warranty - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM
    By -

I bought a 1999 Grand Am SE 4 door about 10 months ago and I have had nothing but trouble since I bought it. So far the transmission has been rebuilt, oxygen censor had to be fixed, brakes had to be replaced, the trunk leaks and the back floors get wet when it rains. I have also had problems when trying to acclerate-the car jumps and sometimes stalls. The dealer hasnt figured out what causes it. Do not get me wrong I like my car-it drives nice (when it isnt acting up) but I dont trust it at all. So do yourself a big favor-do not get a Grand Am and if you do make sure you get a VERY good extended warranty. Chances are youll need it.

I am very torn with this car. Replaced rotors at 27K miles that were overtorqued at manufacture. Had to pay for a complete brake job even though the rotors caused premature wear on the pads. Same dealership would not replace my bad radio. Glad that I purchased the extended warranty. Had to use it twice in the last month at 55K miles for almost $3000 in repairs. Both front bearings have been replaced as has strut mount and rack and pinion and a rear control arm. Complained to Pontiac Corp and have basically been told, sorry, at 60,001 miles when my warranty runs out, Im screwed. HOWEVER, when my car is not in the shop or on its way to the shop, I love it.

BRAKES ARE LIKE DISPOSABLE DIAPERS ON THIS CAR. IF YOU DRIVE IT HARD YOULL PAY. i HAVE SHUDDERING FROM THE FRONT END AS DO MANY OTHER OWNERS. THE ENGINE IS DIFFICULT TO WORK ON. THE SEATS DONT LAST AND YOUR REAR SPOILER WILL FADE QUICKLY. PARTS ARE CHEAP FOR THE CAR SO IF YOURE MECHANICALLY INCLINED AND HAVE THE TIME YOU CAN KEEP IT GOING. IM GLAD I BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE I FORGOT HOW CRAPPY GM CARS WERE AND HAD PLANNED ON BUYING A TAHOE. NOT ANYMORE. THE CAR IS POORLY DESIGNED JUNK. AVOID IT. RESALE ON THE CAR IS PATHETIC.

  • Great car! - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

I inherited my 99 Grand Am from my grandmother when I was 16 (in 2005). It had 117,000 miles on it and had no problems at all. Shortly after getting it, the window on the driver side refused to roll up. The volume control for the radio was faulty. Those were the only things that ever happened to it. I never got them fixed, and was fine. Went to college for a year without it. Sat for 2 years w/o driving. Replaced coolant system, fuel pump, and battery and it was back to running great! The side mirrors fell off (easy fix-it-yourself). Have to junk yard it because I got rear-ended. Im sad to see it go. Considering getting another. Excellent car. I definitely recommend it!

  • WORST CAR EVER - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

This is by far the worst car I have ever owned, It sits so low to the ground, in the front it has rusted out all over the wheel wells, and the underneathe, even after washing it once a week in the winter. I have had to replace, exhaust, cat, brakes, rotors, plugs, tires. Its not secure when I drive on dirt roads the dust and dirt comes right into the trunk. Very poor quality and the speakers sound awful

  • Unreliable - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

This car was a lot of fun when I first got it. I kept it for 8 years. It was never reliable. It had problems from the day I drove it off the lot. Eventually the warranty expired and I couldnt afford to keep up with all the maintenance. I kept up with reasonable maintenance and traded it in for a new Civic when it became too unreliable/expensive to keep.

  • Great but only when new - 1999 Pontiac Grand AM

Lots of repairs! Alternator went, climate control panel replaced twice and now gone again, coolant in the oil, transmission acts funny, the list goes onÂ… The V6 gives it a good get and up and go but its noisy. Now the cabin noise is high at highway speeds and much of the suspension needs replacing. The extended warranty covered the car through 75k and it paid for itself at least 5 times over and it was only $900 to begin with. When the car was new, it was absolutely beautiful inside and out. More repairs are needed but I think I will just throw it away for a new car, trade-in is almost nil.
