This Year's Model Updates:

Oldsmobile has dropped the slow-selling Achieva in favor of this new clean-sheet design patterned after the successful Intrigue midsize sedan. Available in both two- and four-door configurations with three well-equipped trim levels, the Alero represents a quantum leap forward over previous small Olds models.

Pros:
  • Sleek styling. Sprightly performance and handling. Ergonomically designed interior. Well-equipped standard model.
Cons:
  • Hint of cheapness to interior bits. Lame front passenger cupholder. Unrefined engine noise intrudes upon passenger compartment. Ugly cloth fabric pattern on GX and GL.

My father bought his Alero a couple of years ago, and I have to admit that at first I was rather appalled by his decision to get this car. However, whatever opinions I had about the car quickly changed after a few errand runs. The Alero has a way of growing on you. This cars traction control system works wonders in the snow. It got me out of a bad situation real quick...

  • Great car! - 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

I have owned my Alero since 1999. I have NEVER had any major problems with my car. I have taken it in regularly for the maintenance and oil changes. My warranty just expired last year and the only things that I have had to replace is the motor for the power window. I would highly reccomend this car to anyone. Too bad they do not make them anymore!

These are just SOME of things that put this car in the shop in the 1st 40,000 miles: Brake rotors resurfaced at 10K and 20K miles. Low speed fan motor replaced at 20K. Low speed fan resistor replaced at 30K and 36K miles. COMPLETE ENGINE REBUILD NEEDED AT 38,000 Miles - Right after warranty period was over. $4,000. Fog lamps and headlights/taillights failed. Now the front left end is loud, grinding and vibrating - maybe a joint or something - not waiting around to find out. Drove it to a Kia dealer (just made it) and traded it in for $5,000. Bought a Sorento SUV. One sentence on the Alero - WORST CAR EVER!

I bought my car new from the dealership with the extended 60 month/60,000 mile warranty (which was worth paying for). The water pump and cruise control button have been replaced-all covered by warranty. The little piece of plastic behind the emergency flasher button on the dash also broke when I used my flashers for the sixth or seventh time-seems to happen often according to the dealership. It was only covered by warranty when it started interfering with the turn signals. The leather on my dash has started bubbling-probably from 3 years in the Southeast sun.

It has been in service more than I have had the chance to drive it.

  • Great Little Car - 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

I just bought this car with 43,000 miles on it and so far i love it. The turn signals dont work all the time unless they have been "warmed-up" and the two back speakers have been blown out but other than that it has been great. The placement of the cupholders is not the greatest but everything else inside the car is fine. Legroom in the backseat is standard for the midsize type of car but could be better for 6 foot adults. Great first car.

  • Pre-Owned Alero review - 1999 Oldsmobile Alero

Since the day I bought this car it has been nothing but wonderful, of course you get the pre-owned quirks but all that aside, I love the accessory of being told when one of my tires are low, and being able to choose between playing a cd or a cassette tape in my car. I believe I made a great decision on my first purchase of a pre-owned but still feels new Alero.

The Oldsmobile Alero is a fun car to drive. It "fits" my style...the stereo is set at an angle so tuning in is easy. I feel safe in my car, its a sturdy vehicle but as stylish as a European import.
