This Year's Model Updates:

The big news for the 2005 Mini Cooper is the arrival of the convertible in both regular and S flavors. Stylish as ever, the drop-top Mini seats four and still has a trunk big enough for a few bags. Other changes include slightly revised front and rear fascias and some reworked option choices. The vanity mirrors are no longer illuminated, a universal remote transmitter is now available and a leather-wrapped steering wheel is now standard. The S version gains 5 horsepower and 7 pound-feet of torque, as well as an external temperature display. Both the five- and six-speed manual transmissions feature shorter gearing this year to improve acceleration. A six-speed automatic transmission will become available on the S versions later in the model year.

Pros:
Cons:
  • Not enough horsepower in base model, questionable seat comfort, not much room for passengers and cargo, some low-grade interior materials.

  • Mini Needs Better Gas Mileage - 2005 Mini Cooper

I have owned this car for about six months. Its fun to drive, has a classy interior, and is loaded with everything and has chrome everywhere. It is easy access to whatever you need. This car has a great panoramic roof!! With a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine it needs to get much better gas mileage though. I have the auto. w/o supercharger and only get about 26 mpg. I would suggest the S model for those who drive on the highway. Getting on and off highway ramps gets a bit tricky. As for the interior room, Ive taken 3 coworkers of average size to lunch and they seemed comfortable on the short ride. I enjoy this car because Im a 53 inch female and it fits me. Getting in and out is easy, and I have a back seat for stuff. I just need to adjust to the lack of power.

Nov 04 I went to Moritz BMW to test drive a 3-series. Saw the Mini dealer next door and did a test drive. Thats all it took! 10 months and 7400 miles later...its GREAT! With the youngest out of the house, its just my wife and I. Even did a Mini road rally this past Labor Day weekend in TX hill country. Those backroads were built for this car!!

The MINI Cooper S is a great little car. Its lots of fun to drive and corners as if on rails...but only on dry roads. If the road is wet or worse (snowy) this thing is scary dangerous. The run flat tires are hard and stiff and provide scant traction. We live in the foothills outside of Denver and value our lives more than the car. Also, resale value is NOT as good as we had expected.

At first, I was somewhat shocked that I switched from a minivan to this tiny car. But within a day of driving, I realized why I fell in love with this high performance car. It is not a smooth ride but a thrilling ride. Extremely safe, quick, manuverable and surprisingly comfortable.

Bought my 2005 Cooper S used (one year old and 12,000 miles on it). Dont put a lot of miles on it, but it is driven most days. Repairs needed by 25,000-30,000 miles indicate that many of the components just arent the sturdiest (wheels, tires, multiple oil leaks and a power steering fluid leak, suspension parts in need of replacement), but with the work done, it seems like new, and I would like to drive it forever.

We dumped our Jetta for a Mini, and it was a great decision. It feels so exhilirating to ride. The vroom of the 1.6-liter four makes me want to go faster. The transmission, though is a different story. But there is so little body lean, it corners perfectly, why get an S model if this is enough? The rear seat is surprisingly roomy for a car this small. Most controls are simple to use. The outside is just adorable. The white goes perfectly with the black roof. Driving lamps help at night. Its sad that there isnt enough room for us and our luggage, so we cant go to Chicago with it. But its so much fun just to drive through the city. Its so playful.

Since I bought the car in Nov Ive had to make the trip to the dealer four times. They had to replace the hood latch, headlights, seatbelt and power steering pump. When the power steering pump started to go it made this tremendously loud noise. So loud Id have to turn off my car in the bank drive thru. Its on its way into the shop this week actually to have the front end looked at. The tires were so incredibly expensive that I had to go out and buy run of the mill tires just to make it through this winter.
